Headed down for some ski turns next week and thinking of bringing the bikes. With the huge snowpack this year, is there any riding yet at Tahoe or near Mammoth?
I remember the last big, big snow year in '83, and there was still six feet of snow in South Lake Tahoe and Mammoth townsite. Wondering if that's the case again this year.

Way too much snow up high to ride anywhere still. You could probably hit the lower elevation stuff like Peavine near Reno, Pine Nut Mtns near Carson City, or the Bishop/Lower Rock Creek area near Mammoth.
like lego said WAY too much snow in and around tahoe to do any biking, but i hit up the pinenut mtns two days ago and the trails were in great shape, but boring (unless you have big balls and are willing to leave the ground constantly, then there is a great but short course in the pinenuts which i have walked my bike down, once ;) ).
i don't think we will be doing any of the higher elevation rides, like mr. toad's, until august. snowpack is deep and dense.
Thanx for the info. We'll probably do our biking near Bend or Hood River on the way down or the way back. Not so much snow in those areas.
yeah, my buddy and i were talking today about when we thought some of the trails might be rideable with the big snow this year...maybe mid June for Emmigrant? And maybe mid July for Hole in the Ground? Flume/TRT? July?
i don't have alot of experience with hole in the ground but i was up there last year in july and there were still patches of snow on the climb.
flume/trt portion will be mid july i would guess. some trails i am guessing late july or august.
since i keep waking up to dustings of snow on the ground this week, i think i might be awhile before some of the trails melt out. give it a couple more weeks, but i'll start doing some recon trail rides/runs etc. i gotta start getting ready for the Deathride....
yeah, hole in the ground usually has some snow on the climb through July, but its rideable, once you crest the summit and start down....every year there is that snow berm towards the top of the climb, and we try and ride it, and always end up washing out :D its fun to egg your friends on and watch them crash...Quote:
