My dawg goes under the knife Friday morning

Tomorrow (Friday) at 7am MST the coolest dog I've ever had the pleasure to take care of goes under the knife. Stella's having both back knees scoped in the morning. Hopefully, they don't find any significant tears. She's also got a pretty nasty case of hip dysplasia in her right hip. She'll probably just have to deal with that for the rest of her life because her knees will never likely be strong enough to deal with the hip rehab after surgery.
This dog is as sweet as any dog I've ever come across. She just got dealt a crummy genetic hand. Arthritic knees and bad hips. Hopefully after rehab she'll be able to at least go for walks with me again.

Dogs are amazing, on that note Stella we want you pushing that rehab and listen to the doc's orders when it comes to the rehab. My dog Dana had to have her ACl replaced the same month as I did. I went to pick her up the day she was cut and she came out the door on 3 legs and jumped right into my truck.

I hope Stella makes it through the surgery alright. I bet she'll be back to normal damn quick. Hell you will probably have to slow her down. I always found it amazing how dogs can be so active after surgery. It's like they can ignore pain.

Good Luck Stella! She looks awesome. Our Husky has hip dysplasia(sp?) and will most likely need a hip transplant later on in her life. It's amazing how far technology has come as far as hips go. Something like a 98% recovery rate!!!

As I feared and half-expected, Stella had a partially torn right ACL (technically a CCL in dogs) and fully torn left ACL. The Doc released the right one and cleaned up the joints in both. Because of her hips she's not a very good candidate for TPLO knee surgery (pretty much a rebuild of the knee). So, he expects that with both joints released and cleaned up that most of her pain will be relieved and she should be able to return to moderate activity after a couple weeks of inactivity and then a few weeks of hydro-rehab.

Broke my heart to see her all splayed out on the table. She'll be spending the night in the hospital and coming home tomorrow morning.

She'll probably never trust me to take her for a ride again. :)

I mean, think about it. It's a total waste of money. When my grandmother was sick, we didn't do any palliative care at all-- just left her, really. I saved a ton on medications and home care. I think some of it did, in fact, go to feed some local homeless. I delivered it on the new bike I just got with the rest.

I'm going to do the same thing for my parents.

I can only hope someone will be kind enough to do that for you, too, Paladin.

Sure dogs are nice and all and I'm sure he really loves her but now he has spent a pile of cash to have a crippled for life dog. Where do you draw the line? If next year she gets sick & needs a $1k in treatment his dog now has run him even more for a crippled dog who is in pain when she goes for walks but does it because she like to please his master. As stated above they have an "undying devotion to please you" it's true. An old crippled dog will walk tiil it drops if it thinks it will make you happy. Let's say 2-3 years from now Jibij has a kid. Old crippled dogs are not kid friendly. Does he put her down or try to give her to someone else to look after in her declining years.

I'm not trying to be a dick (it comes naturally) I am just looking at it from a pragmatic point of view. I once had a dog who got injured and was going to need approx. $1500 to repair and then not be what she once was. The vet wanted an additional $100 to put her down and deal with the body. I took her home and said goodbye, put a .22 in her head and burried her under an oak tree. It was one of the hardest things I've ever done.

Paladin - I'm a grownup with kids. How I choose to spend my money, how I choose to raise my kids and how I choose to care for the pets that my family and I have agreed to care for is my business. I didn't start this thread to create some sort of pro-life/pro-choice debate. I started it because there are a lot of dog friendly people on this site and those people are also an extension of my family. I felt like sharing.

Here's the great thing about our society:
As long as I'm not fukkin' something up for somebody else, I get to live my life the way I choose. You get the right to spout your opinions regarding my choices (a decent member of that society would recognize the right time and place to express those opinions).
