I get catch and release on high pressure trout streams. The State DEC is dropping 37,000 11" trout into the lake a few miles away. Again. 120 acres, max 40' deep. It's catch if you can barbless artificial only. I have always preferred catch and eat. What happens to the fish? Eagles can only eat so many dead floaters. What am I missing?

Your F&G probably wants to create a lake that holds a higher percentage of larger fish, i.e. a so called trophy fishery. Smaller, shallow lakes tend to be more fertile and likely produce enough food to grow holdover trout to decent sizes. Anglers who appreciate a quality of the day experience over a quantity of meat experience buy licenses too. Griping about a C&R, gear restricted lake is sort of like complaining about not being able to ride a snow machine in a wilderness area. There are other options. You can harvest trout or ride a snow machine in the other 95% out there. Ask your F&G what they plan; in the future, if the lake takes off, they might still restrict gear but allow harvest of one 20+ incher per day.
i have little problem taking a stocked trout once in a while. I am ignorant to this particular situation though and the goals of the stocking program.
If you want meat fish its cheaper to buy them at the store, a live fish is worth more to the fishery than a dead fish cuz the catch and release fishery brings in a lot of money to an area, around here the fisherman come from all over the world to fish steelhead, year after year they spend money on food booze hotels guides
some of them pay me good money to shuttle their trucks down the river and on the way home ... I buy fish at safeway

Shit, when I catch-and-release, I use treble hooks with barbs. Stupid fuckin' fish deserves to bleed out, or die of infection, if it's stupid enough to eat my treble hook while chasing my Uncle Josh's pork rind bait.
Every study ive ever seen shows that a very small percentage of fish released die. Also, by making it catch and release only there will be less fisherman, less poaching, and less pressure. Sounds like they want to develop a strong population before they let you start keeping them.Quote:

I know bass and pike and great lakes salmon but mountain cold water fish are new. My 2nd annual fishing license just expired without wetting a line and like I said I fish to catch and eat. For more reasons than the economics. I'm leaning towards "jack booted money grabber we like lots of rules and user fees" in this case. I'll do further study. I spoke with the govt water guy at the dock and can't remember what I said but his reply was "Why not just toss some dynamite over the side."
At one end of the spectrum I have floated by yer captain of industry (70% are American) on the Babine smoking a 35$ cohiba as he flicks his fly in the middle of nowhere and tells himself how grand it all is, buddy took the corporate jet then choppered into silver hilton where he is spending 1000$ a day and the only way to get a better week is to wait till someone dies

A mature cutty / bow / brown deserves a fair fight. If you can't keep it taught and properly manage the fish, you probably don't deserve to net him or her.
SFB did a good job of explaining a) your likely alternatives and b) why barbs prevent CnR from working. A lot of times you'll snag a firm lip that's durable and won't hurt the fish. But a lot of other times they'll partial or full swallow the fly. Barbless makes for a much cleaner retrieval, keeps your flies in your vest and the blood in the fish. Barbed 1x much less 3x and the fish is really at risk. Have a day where you catch the same big fish 2x, catch one your friend just caught or one that has signs of prior catches and you'll start to see the advantage of low impact regulations. More fish and/or bigger fish and more fun for everyone. A healthy fishery is a great asset.
Havent read any replies but all I do is C&R... I mostly fish for bass but have been catching alot of trout and kokkane salmon in Connecticut recently.... Yeah, I'll eat some panfish. But why not let fish get bigger and lay some more eggs for next year?

Yes, I know a ton about artificial kokanee fisheries, there are only 2 bodies of water in CT with these western north american salmon species. They happen to do very well in the lake I was fishing in. No shit they're stocked, there are no native salmon in CT..... HAHQuote:

Again, I don't know about CT kokanee, but most artificial kokanee fisheries are managed as put and take because they don't successfully spawn. "Put and take" means they are meant to be caught and killed.
edit: Assuming you are catching those fish during their run, they are going to die anyway. There is merit to releasing them to be caught by other anglers, I'll give you that.
I went through my "Fishn' Period" where I'd go any chance I could and too often. Mostly farm pond pike to eat and small mouth to play with. Hooking without eating seems always seemed a bit odd to me. Sort of disrespectful. I think I share that feeling with a lot of the red necks. Now I'm at a different place and another "Period" with a snow and spring fed river I can hear from my bed. But I get it Here.
I'll bore you with an appropriate(?) old TR in my thread.
Me and my lady decided on back packing for a week in Baxter. 9 hours drive to the Togue Gate entry and everything in the park was booked except a lean-to at Trout brook. 3 hours away. Stopped in a town along the way right out of "Deliverance" complete with two guys with 30 teeth between them gawking at my gal in the country store. Checking in, the ranger offered a canoe us across the river where we start the 8 mile hike in. The leanto was above a beach where the small river fell over a ledge and into a 1/2 acre pool. Being July and hot we went in for a swim and 6" trout started nibbling at our legs!! Well, next morning I took out my survival fishing kit, baited the hook with left over burnt pancake and caught enough native brookies for lunch before the dishes were dry. I hear the fishing there is still good.

It's weird... This is by far the cleanest lake in CT also 60+ feet deep, a lot of people think the spawn is successful, but the DEEP here in CT take alot of the salmon that spawn near the boat launch and im not sure what they do with them but they bring back all the small fry in the spring... They also stock around 13,000 trout PER YEAR.... thats nuts. i really shouldnt be saying this but the CT state record bass IS IN THERE.... I caught a 5.5 pound bass yesterday there.... there are bass ive seen spit out 13inch brown trout.... We were catching some salmon that were rotting.... But whoever would keep some of those post spawn salmon are fuckin nuts lol, yeah might as well keep kokanee because they just die in 2-4 years anyway... stocking catchables and then trying to create a trophy fishery seems pretty dumb. Total waste of money, if you wanna have a higher quality stocked fishery stock em as fingerlings that way you have a less fucked up fish to C&R and more importantly spend less money raising your stockers.
