cassette with compact double

doing an over haul to my components on the roadie after my FSK crank failed. Going from old ultegra groupset to new (granted they make 11 speed now) 10 speed all ultegra. Just bought a 50-34 compact double, bout to order a cassette to go with new group set (brifters, brakes etc).

My setup now is 53-39 w/ 12-27.

My choices are :

12-23
11-23
11-28
11-25
12-25
12-30


I climb a lot. I live in the mountains and ride up here in scummit and down in golden/denver/boulder and in between (evans etc). I'd like another bail out gear, but not sacrafice too much on top end, but also want to respect the jumps between gears and not have to many crazy gaps.

curious as to what you ride with your 50-34s and what you think is ideal.

the rear deraileur is ultegra 6700 10 sp (for limit purposes)

also someone sell me your sweet, ready to rolll AM/fr mtb rig for 1000 bucks in summit/eagle/front range. do it now.

11-25 and a tampon if you start feeling like a swollen pussy

I'm happy with 11-25. You definitely don't want a 12-x or you will spin out easily, and 34x25 will get you up anything unless you suck and are fat.

11-25 is all I've known, but it works for me w/ 50-34.

11-28 is far and away the most popular and sought after Cassette configuration right now with road bikes, especially in mountainous areas.

Ride the same places.
50/31 & 11/28.

I'm weak. YMMV.

Unless you've got a long cage, the 30 is out.

it's between the 11-28 and 11-25, but if I'm using the gear calcs right a 27-39 and a 25-34 are the same ratio which means i wouldn't be getting an extra gear. on the flip side the 11-28 lacks the 16t cog which I've heard is a nice one and the 15-17 jump is a little awkward-- any truth to this?

i'm solid but looking to get over the hump to the next level, I'm right around 3 hrs and chage on evans which for some reason i use as my benchmark for climbing, would like to get consistently under 3, i don't know where that puts me on the pussy-real man continuum but anyways, my usual rides around 50-60 mi with a 3k of climbing, longish rides are 80-90 miles like the triangle with 6-7k of climbing, and then a 2-3 (hopefully more) century plus rides a summer

34x25 is about equivalent to a 39x29 (actually 28.7). So you're getting a smaller low gear but only by a bit (about 6% or 1/2 a gear given your stepping). If you really want a bailout from what you have now get the 11-28 (or an 11-26 SRAM).

A 16 is nice but 15-17 isn't really that big a deal, it's only 13%. Smaller jump than the 21-24 you have now.

thanks tele dad, i thought maybe i was getting some miscalculations on my gear ratios... i think 11-25 is the ticket as it will give me something slightly easier on the lowest end, in retrospect, that will work rather than needing a bailout gear. plus cassettes are cheap relatively speaking if i don't like.

Already mentioned, but don't rule out the 11-26 from SRAM. Kind of sounds like you would get everything you want out of that.

11-26, 12-27 or 11/12-28 are good options
25 will leave you standing and pumping vs sitting and spinning, depending on your power and weight, and preference. But I'd rather have another spinning gear vs 11 cog. Once you hit 35 mph, do you really need to pedal any more?
