Cars buried in avalanche on Berthoud Pass

DENVER - The Colorado State Patrol says motorists were trapped when an avalanche swept across U.S. Highway 40 at Berthoud Pass Friday afternoon.

Troopers say all the motorists in the three cars trapped were able to escape after the slide hit four miles east of Winter Park around 3 p.m. There were no injuries.

The Colorado Department of Transportation is reporting the slide closed U.S. 40 in both directions. CDOT reopened the highway around 9 p.m.

Joann Jordan was stuck in traffic on U.S. 40 after the slide. She said she initially thought cars were stuck in a snow bank on the side of the road. The snow bank turned out to be the avalanche covering the highway.

There were signs warning that the road was shut down, but many motorists kept going right up to the closure, just trying to find out when the pass might reopen.

Crews performed avalanche mitigation in that area Thursday. The area received more than a foot of snow Friday.
