TR: Ushuaia August 2013

This was my second time to Ushiaia having had the opportunity to live in Argeninta for a few years I haven't been back in about 4 years. I decided to make another trip down there before I started law school this fall and I was trying to do some research before this trip and found very little beta on ushuaia. I was able to do 2 weeks down there with the blue dollar all under a grand, hostels ran me about 10 bucks a night and lift ticket cost me about 25 a day. Nights out at Dublin cost me more per day than everything else. Ushuaia is a pretty beautiful with very easy access to the mountains, we did try and get a heli one day but for three runs on "mellow" terrain they wanted almost 1100 bucks. We said no and hiked.
I know some of these photos are not like some of the other TR's on Ushuaia but considering I only found 2 on here I figured a few pictures of the area couldn't hurt someone trying to figure out what it is like down there. I took a bunch of pictures but unfortunately there were very few action shots, i'm not a pro. They do i hope give you a good idea of the unbelievable untouched terrain down there.

We ended up staying with a friend about a mile outside Cerro Castor who lived at a dog sled camp. We skied over after a few bottles of wine at the lodge and cooked some fresh lamb empanadas

Great photos! Takes me back. I hear the Argentine peso has dropped a bit. Don't think I'll make it down again this year but really want to.

Cool trip. Did your empanada mission start with killing that lamb?

Nice! I haven't spent much time down there, but it was obvious that there is a huge amount of spectacular terrain. It did seem that the forests below the alpine zones were pretty dense and hard to get through. Any tips or tricks for negotiating them?

my friend did, then kept it outside in a snow cave. fresh lamb empanadas and argentine wine in the woods in terra del fuego was a pretty cool way to spend a few nights outside the city.

dense is an understatement. they would be almost impossible in some sections. Cerro Castor has some decent woods in bounds and along the backside, but a lot of the forest are dense as fock. I asked my friend who lives down there he said that it sometimes takes up to 100 years for a tree to decompose due to the climate even during the summer the temperature rarely goes above 45 degrees F. that said there is a surprising large community of people who climb down there so it can't be impassable.

We used to cook lamb at the glacier martiel refugio with carlos and claudio, party hard and ski down in the dark.

Lenga trees. The trick is to get on your belly and crawl. ;)
The worst thing about them is if the mountains are boilerplate and knowing you'll be sliding at about 80mph when you hit them if you fall.
