Decisions, Decisions....

So once again the gearwhore jones has set in, and this time its bikes. I have 3 ideas that are horrendously bad for my bank account, and could use some help.

1. BMX - cheap, never had one, seems like fun. However, I was not meant to fly, flip or spin, so this may be a bad choice.
2. DH - thinking of picking up a DH ride so I can go shralp gnar in the offseason. Also gives me an excuse to pick up a full-face. Thinking of doing this with a summer attitash pass for maximum fun.
3. Urban/other beater hardtail - Still got love for the hardtails, and it would serve both as a fun thing to play around with in town and at the local park complex as well as allow one of my other roomies to ride with us.

Please help, before I blow my money on hookers and blow.

Get the best that your money will buy. How much might that be? Also, consider used and get a couple of nice bikes.

all of these would hopefully be used. I already have a line on a cheap DH rig.

as long as the color is obsequious, I'm sold. I'm currently looking at this for 1050.

I can do that. The bike looks like this: http://www.bikes.com/bikes/2005/steel/blizzard.aspx Comes with a diferent component package, however. V-brakes, but disk-compatable.

I would, but I already have a XC bike. A sugar 4+. I love it entirely too much. Nice bike though, I'm sure it will make someone very happy.

nice bike but not exactly an urban/beatthehellouttait ride he'd want in a hardtail.

schuss, there's a huge difference in price from hardtail thrasher to a dh rig, but I'm sure you know that.

That said, I know Mr. Altagirl is looking to part with his badass (and by badass I mean punch your mom in the throat badass) Yeti DH that you would have way too much fun on.

On the other hand, playing the urban scene on a hardtail is loads of fun too. All kinds of sweet hardtail frames out there (a good cheapo being the Azonic steelhead). Do a search in the DH forum on MTBR for hadtail frames and you'll get lot's of good advice.

1. Get a Soul Cycles "sponsorship".

2. Buy a Titan or Loki and build up a burly, hardtail beater...cheap.

3. Ride the piss out of it, repeat.

Though the Bullit is far from a true DH bike, it is similar enough to make a comparison. I absolutely love that bike. Not much compares to bombing down hairy downhills and hucking meat whenever the chance arrives. However, despite my love for the Bullit, it sees about a quarter of the use that my hardtail does. Granted, the hardtail doubles as an XC machine, but it sees its fair share of freeride and urban.

There's really nothing quite as versatile as a nicely built freeride/urban hardtail, and they can be built for pretty cheap.

Edit: incidentally, I saw an Evil D.O.C. at Ray's the other day. Friggin' beautiful, and half the price of the Sovereign.

Also saw a Steelhead, and spun it around a bit. Steel and under $200...tough to beat.

Edit: Oh yeah, love the 3 steps. Once again my consultant gives good advice, especially number 1 & 3. Everyone needs a sponsorship. I can't wait till they come out with the fs or freeride later this year. I am all over that, just don't know which.

schuss, if I were you I would spend 1000-1500 on a freeride/dh bike. I wouldn't go full on DH cause you wouldn't be taking that to the park. Try 6-7" of travel front and rear and let er rip. I might have a line on a hollowpoint MX depending on when the MKIII MXpros become avalible. or a SGS fr. both would make sick bikes for EC rides.

tempting. I already have a 4" XC ride, and was thinking of just picking up a mtn. pass for the DH action when I feel the need for speed. Still tempted by the hardtail though.

Go to www.unrealcycles.com, and you will know what to do. I like the badass hardtail idea. Get the right fork, and you can still DH. That is AFTER you stomp some urban on your way to get hookers and blow with the money you'll save :biggrin: .
