Global Warming to Continue for Next 100 years

A new study says that we are past the point of no return with regard to global warming and that even if all greenhouse gas emissions were held at today's levels, there would still be warming temperatures and rising oceans for the next 100 years.

The culprit remains mankind's never-ending desire for fast cars and electricity, not to mention an ever increasing population which places more demands on all human resources.

The study was published in the journal 'Science.' It was conducted by a team of scientists from the National Center for Atmospheric Research based in Boulder, Colorado. They ran extensive computer models to determine the future effect of global warming even if greenhouse gas emissions held steady or even decreased. Their findings: North American could face excessive heat waves and a possible swarm of crop-eating insects.

Tom Wigley, one of the authors of the study explained the problem by saying, 'If you take your foot off the accelerator, the vehicle doesn't stop; it just keeps going for a while,' he said. 'That's essentially what's happening because of the massive thermal inertia of the ocean.'

The authors of the study hope that the results spur people to action, not to panic. 'Many people don't realize we are committed right now to a significant amount of global warming and sea level rise because of the greenhouse gases we have already put into the atmosphere,' said Gerald Meehl, the author of the study. 'The longer we wait, the more climate change we are committed to in the future.

I would take information that predicts things out as far as 100 years with a grain of salt. Just think of the technological advancements in the last century and any of those in any 100 year period. Alot can change in the next hundred years

But no matter how you look at it, Oceans (Water) Change temperature more slowly than air. We can't just put a big dry ice cube in the ocean and expect the ocean temps to recede overnight. I say its time to not take it with a grain of salt and make the changes NOW!!!!

Here in the PNW we are experiencing the affects of a warmer pacific with higher snow levels and or no snow at all.

Skiers and the ski industry should be on the forefront of this discussion. Our sport has the most to lose from this.

Also, its because of technological advancement that they can model predictions 100 years out.

Just playing devil's advocate, but didn't the PNW get record snowfalls over the past few years? I remember Baker getting like 1100 inches a few years ago.

Not record. But not bad. What we need to look at is the frequency or El Ninoish winters without La nina counterbalance seasons. We've had like three el ninos since 96. Whereas only one (really awesome) La nina.

Sure our snow levels have been close to average or better many seasons. But the actual quality of snow has become worse and worse at lower elevations. (much heavier and more water content than our already high water content snow.)

But since 98 our snow levels have been inching higher and higher. Here in Pdx even with last season we've had much warmer winters with less snowfall on average than in the past.

Listening to Al Franken show on Air America. He's broadcasting from sundance resort. Chatting with mayor of slc, talking about global warming and how slc is abiding by kyoto even if shrubya ain't. the Mayor stated that when slc hosted the olympics a bunch of scientists spoke regarding low elevations at ski resorts will suffer and people will need to go higher up to find snow.

this year wasnt bad because of global warming. global warming could not have made that dramtic of a change in 1 year and is it global cooling when last years summer was cool?no i dont think so.

tell me something I don't know. doing my part when and where I can.

Don't forget that no one has proven that the contemporary global warming trend isn't just a continuation of the naturally occurring warming-cooling cycle that's been going on for thousands of years.
Not to rag, there are good incentives for reducing greenhouse gas emissions other than global warming.

I'm part of the problem.

I drive 100 miles south once a week to ski with freaks like Powstash, APD, and Gramps. Then at home I use a sled on 25% of my outings. Senseless use of greenhouse gas emitting vehicles.

My gas guzzling motorhome has 180watts of solar panels on it though.




Senseless sarcasm directed at the hopelessness of the situation.

Humans, by nature, are self destructive.

We get 4 vessel heart by pass after 50 years of eating McDonalds. Instead of eating and living healthy.

We start saving for retirement too late, instead of in our youth.

And we will do little to nothing to change our lifestyles until it is too late. We will destroy ourselves eventually.

I personally try to burn as much fossil fuel as I can. It's good for the economy and I like the sounds big engines make. The sooner the humans kill themselves off the sooner the planet will heal itself. Clearly I'm the real environmentalist. Tree huggers are only trying to save the humans...fuggin lying hippie asshats.

Did you know if you drive a hybrid in Aspen you park for free downtown? Correct me if I am wrong. And don't be puttin' down the Ute City. Best free bus system. Not to mention some totally kick ass terrain.

As far as driving is concerned, Its not so much ski traffic. Where we have to drive less is in the cities. Improve public transport, put paniers on your bike, walk rather than drive to the store. I think the rising price of gas will drive that change hopefully.

The crappy thing is, as much as we change, we still have countries like China. They are growing immensly, and their thirst for fossil fuels is skyrocketing, hence the expensive gas prices. Not to mention all the other countries that need to change too.

I know we burn a disproportionate amount of the worlds supply of crude, but we need to get everyone else in line too.

The next best way to change the environment is in the year 2008.

this shouldn't come as much of surprise to anyone considering planet earth used to be completely covered in ice. safe to say global warming has been happening for the last 50 million years; give or take.
