hey folks, there's an interesting thread down here on best towns in the world.... three switz towns (GE, ZH, BE) are leading in an official rank..... really need your CH-resident opinion about... albeit I understand you might be skiing and thus occupying your time much better than checkin'out the TGR board..... :D
All over-crowded, up-tight culture, way too expensive, low pay for holders of Permit B, and way too much cheese served in restaurants.Quote:

I must say, I notice the difference when I leave the country.
Not to be too arrogant about it, but I notice the trash along the roads,
the smell in the train stations, and the general dirt that normally exists in other parts of the world.
How the Swiss manage it so well is worth the recognition.
And, those are only the larger towns. I imagine smaller towns, like Vevey, Luzern, and others, would rank higher than the ones recognized if they too were measured. Leysin too!!!
What makes this place so nice:
Clean water flowing in almost every town, from a fountain.
I can't remember the last time I saw a homeless person living on the street.
The trains are a step above the rest, the best in Europe I say.
The bike paths are excellent and under-rated.
The lakes are clean and people swim in them.
The schools are very good.
Crime...let's just say people respect the law, for the most part. :wink:
(In that, I mean to say, we can do as we wish, so long as we are hurting no one else.
Sometimes we break the law, but no one cares.)
Food is high quality, albeit EXPENSIVE.
No trucks on highways.
The list goes on...
Needless to say, I agree with the study.

The ability to wander almost anywhere on foot. Hiking access is honored in a very big way over here. The countryside and mountains are accessable to all.
Crime. Away from the big cities in the small towns and countryside you could drop your wallet and few would touch it. I have seen things of value picked up and placed in noticeable places for the person to recover. But, Geneve and Zurich are getting crime-ridden like any major city. Too many outsiders in low-end, no-end jobs.

TeleAl doesn't own a car, takes the train (or bikes) everywhere.
I drive. Always plenty of tractor trailer trucks on the highways.
