This should be an easy one but I see people calling it both ways so I wanted to see what the general consensus was:
When you call a mounting point of +1, +2, etc for a particular ski, is that the ball of foot position line, or the marked boot midsole line?

for me it is Boot Midsole. however unless you are a jib spinner always mount on the line or backwards for a powder mount.
to me it means putting the alpine boot sole center line on OR +/- however many cm's from the ski mfger's recommended center line
I think that ball of foot thing is for the telewankers

right, definitely re: mounting back behind the factory line. I'm usually always debating between mounting on the furthest back factory line or -1 behind it.
Whenever I research mounting points though, I find a lot of opinions that are very specific about where to mount, but it's usually unclear where they are measuring from. I usually mount -1 in relation to the midpoint line on my boot. My BOF measurement is about 2-3cm forward of the boot midpoint, which is enough of a distance to really mess up a mount.
+1, +2, etc. is in relation to the ski manufacturer's suggested line. That is almost always boot center, but there are exceptions, e.g., for awhile some Volkl skis were marked with boot toe line.

So it sounds like consensus is based on the boot shell midpoint, and ball of foot measurements are for wankers.
In theory mounting per BOF would be ideal but boot and ski manufacturers mark boot center, not BOF.
All modern skis and boots have a mid-sole line. That's the reference point.
No one uses BOF anymore unless you're an old fuck who hangs out in the PSIA hut, or an old fuck who skis tele.
But still good to check where that midsole mark is with a tape measure fo' sure. ie last year's 187 Hojis had the little arrow at -7.5 from center, which is 85cm from tail. Most (and Hoji himself) recommend skiing the 187 Hojis at 87cm from tail (-5.5cm), which is +2cm from the little arrow. Always best to do some research prior to mounting for opinions on the best spot.Quote:
