Utards (and anyone who knows) :: Jeep Week in Moab?

So...a friend is in town this week and they're intrigued by the Jeep Safari thing this weekend in Moab. They're on their spring break and kinda want to be retarded, and from what I've heard it's a pretty retarded time.

I may head down with 'em as I'm kind of an ignorant redneck at heart if not in real life, so why not be with my peoples?

Anyhizzle, y'all know anything about it? Would be my friend, his 2 friends from grad school (a Croate and a Brit) and Mrs. Frizzo. Ideally we'd camp, ride bikes, and get stupid with the gas guzzlers.

It's a loosely organized gathering of drunk rednecks. It's not limited to Jeeps you'll see just about every type of 4 wheel drive vehicle out there that weekend. And for some reason it brings the irresposilbe drivers out of the wood work. There is always some serious carnage that week; 3 years ago someone drive their jeep off a cliff and wedged it in some rock fins.

We used to be regular jeep safari attnedees. It is primarily a bunch of young college or high school kids mixed in with some serious off roading necks. The place gets absolutely destroyed, especially around Sand Flats. Haven't been since Sand Flats became a fee area, but hopefully that controlled a lot of it. There were always large parties that sprang up that were a mix of high schooler, college kids, the necks, and the local kids who thought they were tough shit and tried to start something with everyone. Not my cup o tea anymore, but there were definetely some good times had.

We've never tried it. Just heard that it's such a madhouse you'll be lucky to find any place to camp. But it does sound fun...

It's cool to check out alot of extraordinary 4x4 rigs. Go up to the "dump bump" right near the pay station on Sand Flats road, and watch people TRASH their rigs. You'll see rollovers, broken axles, exploding hubs, and all kinds of great carnage that you won't have to deal with . . . just ENJOY! :D Usually alot of girls in bikinis as well.

I used to go for the party, but all the trails get too crowded. Good thing is, if you DO break down, there will be plenty of people to help.

If you are going with someone who has a rig, hit Fins N Things. It's short and alot of fun.

This trip takes a year of planning and everything is often reserved WAY IN ADVANCE.
Its not worth going on a whim, unless you have no concept of time, space or a care in the world. In other words 2 handles of Jim Beam, a driver, and you dont care where you sleep or eat.

It is a great time to get out in the lesser non-OHV areas of Moab because all the users are scared off due to the safari.

Yes there are different levels of impact, but by just living something else has to die, and there is an environmental impact. And there's always going to be someone having less of an impact than you.

We have always avoided Moab during the Safari just because it is WAY too crowded. It is kinda fun to be there, in a circus freak kinda way. I pull through when I'm working sometimes just because I want to see the scene and then get the hell out of there. We have contemplated riding our dirt bikes down there to see the real crazy stuff and heckle but it's always seems to be good skiing up here (so you know where we go instead). It would be an eye opener for your friends for sure, you could always do a long day trip; I make it down there in 3 1/2 hours. Maybe next weekend?????

First - why start a thread if you only want posts you like? "Shitting in your thread" = having a different opinion? Get the fuck over yourself.
If you don't like people taking you to task for fucking up the environment in a totally avoidable way, well, keep your Jeep rallies a secret or something.
You start a thread people will post in it. I didn't post in it to piss you off - just to point out something that some of you guys seem oblivious to.

As you say, there are different levels of impact - and "gettin' stupid with the gas guzzlers" allows individuals to make a pretty big and negative impact.

You *never* drive a car? Good for you - but don't think your enviromental awareness in one area gives you license to go wild in another. Do what you want, but it's pretty hard to attend Jeep rallies and then claim to be Mr. Environment.
btw- I have driven cars about 15 times in the last 10 years. Never owned one, hopefully never will. How's that?

As for eating and shopping, etc - in one week the amount of garbage/recycling I have to put out is less than 1 small grocery bag. That's not perfect, and I never will be perfect - but I won't be gettin' stupid with the gas guzzlers, either.

If you think the world is such a dark and smelly place, perhaps you should pull your head out of your ass.
