TR - Dunderberg, October 25, 2013

On Friday, October 25th four skiers and three dogs went up to Dunderberg for some fun in the snow.
Skiers: Dookey67, Powdrhound, Skibuff, and Vets
Dogs: Bella, Makisha, and Penny

That big slab of ice behind them is Jack's Glacier. We passed on Jack's and headed out to Hidden Glacier.

The snow was fairly interesting - a three layer combination of an icy base covered with a healthy dusting of powdered sugar snow that was topped with wind-buffed smooth 1 to 4 inch variable randomly breakable crust.
Character building stuff.
A fun time was had by all.
Ski streaks were also extended.
Skibuff is up to 37 consecutive months.
Powdrhound is up to 48 consecutive months.
Dookey67 (70) and Vets (120) got in their second October ski days of this season.

Thanks guys that was a super fun day with a great group of guys. Vets save the day and found me an October day to keep my streak alive. I just might be hiking SAT or Echo Summit Wednesday for a second October now that we have this new Pow.

Splat, We have hiked and skied two of the three available troughs/chutes in the past when the conditions were better (twice in September of 2010.) On Friday the chokes were mostly ice so we didn't opt for the longer run (with serious self-arrest potential.)

I am going to count this as closing day on 12-13, day #71.

Man, I was hiking around over there on the weekend looking up at dunderberg. Cant believe you guys were up there skiing! freaking sweet.

We should have discussed this.

It still felt like an old season day to me.

Yes, we did have something other than ice or corn, yet it was leftovers from the brief late-summer storms. We had a semi-long dry rocky hike to get to a pretty short, not exactly extremely pleasurable shot. (Thank you much for driving the jeep trail.)
If I could have gone up for this week's storm, I would have counted That as next year. Semi-long shots of Real powder.

This last year's first day was the fresh day at Boreal October 26th, with a nice ten inches or so. Even if we were supposed to stay within the marked area. Sure. Still, Real powder.

Prior year started with the October 5th storm, taking three days of the Wood. Real Powder. Zachary on the 7th was wonderful. Oh, to have the endurance to do multiple laps... Even if it was the only storm we got until January 21st, it was a real beginning for me.

10/11 started with opening day at Timberline October 29th, on a 32" dump where they opened Pucci & Molly's instead of Palmer. Real fun Powder.

09/10 did not actually begin on powder. Skied November 20 at Mammoth in anticipation of the storm, they were open to the top, hard snow. While North Tahoe received 12"+ from the storm that night, Mammoth got a Trace, if that. Skied Mammoth again anyway, than drove to Tahoe. Skied Boreal November 22nd. Real powder. So the whole trip counted.

So my 13/14 season has not yet begun. I need long lines through deep powder.

Since we didn't discuss this, I'll weigh in. I'm counting it as day #2 of the 2013/2014 season.
I'd consider it to be 2013/2014 accumulation on a 2012/2013 (and many previous year's base.)

Seeing that all of us have skied consecutive months I'm looking at this from a different angle.

I'm still on the 2010-???? season
Powderhound 2009-???? season
Dookey 2008-???? season
Vets is still on the 2003 season

Because if you ski every month does the season really end???:)

I like that view. The Never-Ending Season.

My lady does throw that at me once in a while - that I am never out of ski season!

I'm with Vets on this one.

The way I see it, we had snowfall at the end of September (at least 2 days), not to mention some snowfall in early October. The snow--breakable crust and powdered sugar laying on top of glacial ice--I skied on 9/30, 10/1, and most recently, 10/25, was new. None of this snow existed when I skied Dunderberg on Aug. 15th. In fact, none of the numerous patches I trudged across on the 25th during our approach were in existence back in August. Additionally, the two patches I skied on 9/30 and 10/1 didn't exist back in August, either. As thus, I'm counting Sept. 30, Oct. 1, and Oct. 25 days as my first ski days of 2013/14.

But hey, to each their own in terms of how they calculate their season.
