Birthday Couloir 3-11-05
Not sure what the real name for this couloir is, but today is my 33rd birthday, so I celebrated with 3,300 ft. of fall line skiing.
Stoy was driving a bit reckless and got stuck. Every good day starts out with a little getting stuck. We got it out after we took care of the business at hand for the day.

We perhaps took the hard way to ski today. This is Stoy topping out a 15ft. section of rock. Then getting swallowed up by a pine tree. I almost tumbled off the cliff laughing as he thrashed through it.

The snowpack hadn't froze overnight, so these east facing slopes were getting us nervous.

We almost called it a day here. If this slope ripped, it would have been a 200ft. tumble over a cliff. We backed off this slope and climbed the limestone to escape higher.

Nothing more fun than climbing loose rock with frozen hands and ski boots. Leave your alpine boots at home, vibram is mandatory.

Nice views from the summit and the edge of the world.

We skied a about 2,500 ft. of nice creamy snow down the tree lined couloir/gulley. It was a pleasant 37 degrees. The lower half had slid, so we were skiing soft avy debris.

Stoy with a lot of turns left to go.

The lower section above the rappel was a littly crusty.

We were glad we hauled to 60 meter ropes, because the rappel turned out to be about 160ft of free hanging fun. Here is Stoy, about to swing around in space.

If this were the Wasatch, there would be a fixed rappel line and three shiny pre-placed bolts to rap from. Stoy and I rapped off a dead stump.

There were about four nice bolted sport climbs on this cliff. Looked 5.11-ish. My old ass on the rap.

The tired legs of Stoy below the rap. We were gaping hard down here.

The lower skiing was to die for. Just like the east coast.

Stoy checking out the days work.

Skied from the left summit knob. Out of view into the obvious big gully/couloir.

We could have added about 700 vertical of nice north facing trees to the day. But the 40+ degree temps made us want to get down the couloir fast before anything else decided to tumble down it.
Not sure of the name of this route. It gets skied, but rarely.

Sweet TR TH. Love that silhouetted pic of you on the rap.

Sweet pics and looks like a start to a nice Bday!
From where Stoy "parked", I know pretty much where you all went. Only been up there in the summer. Plus the pics across the canyon.
Stoy has been in Utah too long now as evident by his driving skills. :p

schweet, nice pics and TR, happy birthday......

No, he had it. Any self respecting individual would have hucked it this rappel. It's only 160ft. Paging Pierre.

No, he's standard fare. It just looks weird because you can't see the resolution in the pic. His device looks to be riding high because he is leaning back from the weight of his pack, this makes it look weird.

I'm trying to figure out where that is... is that up near Logan? Where is this, now-fabled "Birthday Couilor?"

3rd dam up Logan Canyon. About 8? miles up the canyon. It is super obvious as you drive down canyon, just look left and you can't miss it.

Oh yeah...happy birthday. Even when the guy is sick he kicks my ass. I don't know what was going on on the rap because I was spinning around in circles. Delirium setting in I guess. Made for a good laugh..actually, laughed from getting stuck, to climbing trees, skinning Michael Jackson style, skiing glorious pow, nasty debris, trees, sticks, vines, and a whirl-wing 160 foot rap.
I was told that this route was anti-climatic  by some locals. Maybe they took the easy route.
PB...yeah its up Logan....comes down just down river of 3rd dam. COmes from the top of Mill Hollow.

I was going to suggest that we ski that today. It looks more challenging. I have stopped countless times on the side of the road in this area, scoping lines, etc.
We should hit before the end of the year. But go up Dry Canyon to approach it.
