Blown Fox Triad on 08 stumpjumper FSR. Repair or replace?

So...the shock on my 2008 stumpy FSR has an identity crisis and acts like a pogo stick rather than a shock absorber. Holds air just fine, but is leaking oil. No exterior damage or scratches of any kind. In full open or full lockout, it bounces around like a monster truck. In propedal, it's okay, but I have to air up to nearly 1 psi per pound of bodyweight to avoid excessive pedal bob. Even then, I'm losing a lot of efficiency on the up, and bottoming out on average size drops.

Question 1 - am I right in thinking this is more than just the seals needing replacement?

Question 2 - if it's more than just the seals, can it be repaired by Fox or Push?

Question 3 - if it can be repaired, is it worth the $200 repair and the month wait, or would it be better to upgrade? I'm willing to put another couple hundred into this bike, but if I need to spend more than $500 to replace the shock, I'd start thinking about getting a bigger travel bike.

Question 4 - if it's time to replace, would this (1) fit in the frame, given the different eyelet bushings, and (2) be an upgrade worthy of the extra $100 over the repair cost? If there's something better out there in a 7.25X1.75, what should I look for?

0. Nearly 1 psi per body weight is not all that unreasonable for FSR. That said, if it feels like garbage, see below anyways.

1. Maybe, hard to say. I'd pull the air sleeve and see what the seals look like. It could just be a $15 fix.

2&3. No way in hell I would pay to have that pile of garbage repaired.

4. Yes, buy the RP23. I;m not sure, but I think you could use the bushings from the Triad, if they are even different.

Assuming that RP23 is the right size for that frame, it's probably worth going with that. There are better shocks out there, but I think you'll have a tough time finding one in the right size. There's a very good chance the triad spacers will fit in the RP23.

No. Kashima is a marginally effective marketing gimmick and CTD is the worst thing to happen to suspension since elastomers.

I would replace it if you can, on my 2010 stumpy I am stuck with the triad so I scored a spare for when it goes tits up.

Big issue with Spec is propriatary designs that limit you to their shit.

RP23 on the way, hopefully in time for me to figure out how to replace it before the long weekend. Looks like there's a handful of the 7.25X1.75 RP23 and Float shocks on eBay right now...if that fits your bike, the prices aren't bad...

I still don't understand this. Its just 5 compression settings. Maybe not as good as infinitely adjustable LSC but certainly not the "worst thing to happen to suspension sense elastomers". Sheesh.

Well, it's 3 compression settings, but to put it more accurately, it's 3 really bad compression settings. There are worse shocks, but to my knowledge there are not any worse shocks that cost $450.

I've got no complaints with the CTD shock on my Endorphin.

There is Climb, Trail, and Descend with the radly ergo blue lever; and then Trail has '1/2/3'. I make good use of most of them, and the levers are set up really well for on the fly flicking. "Really flickable"...if you will. UC won't.

Fox has 6 different volume spacers available for additional tweaking if you feel the need. I'll probably try a few to fully dial it in.

Is it a CCDB? No. But did I spend the better part of a year getting my CCDB fully dialed on my DH bike? YEs.

My TrailAllSuperDuperDuroMountaining Bike sees enough different trail types and conditions in a given month (or particularly good week) that it's nice to have effective, hasty tuning tweaks available.

However, CTD forks are offensive.

dredging up old thread from the depths here....

Blown the brain equipped proprietary shock on my 08 Stumpy. Presume it is going be well north of $200 for a rebuild but my LBS couldn't/wouldn't give me estimate and fricken Spesh won't deal with a consumer:mad:.

Wondering if there is any change to current state of art for these bikes and whether I'm better off buying aftermarket or rebuilding??

Seem the 2015 float in a 7.25*1.75 is about $275 but the new 2016 with DPS whatever that is runs $450.
