Bristol Bay/Pebble Mine spam...sort of

I got a kickstarter campaign going to get my ass up here and document this. Orvis stepped up huge and as of now I am a third of the way there. I need any and all help to pull this off. Please Pledge/share/forward via e mail/ facebook it. Having commercial fished up here this is a big issue for me personally and is for this whole community. To put it bluntly, this is the last intact salmon run in North America and the greatest one left on the planet. From a fishermans perspective it is what we all dream of and hope to get to someday. They are actually contemplating building one big ass open pit mine at the headwaters..... Help me get this done any way you can. Thank you, thank you.....

An incredibly strong and well funded lobby? who? the mine people or the anti mine contingent? cuz as of right now they both are well funded and strong. basically it is the mine vs. Commercial fisherman, sport fisherman, 80% of the locals, environmentalists, the seafood industry, restaranteurs, and hunters. that is a lot of money vs a lot of money...... we shall see

To be clear, I am in your court and hope the mine will be stopped, at least at the scale they are proposing. I am not, however, against mineral/resource extraction as a whole.

The Anti-Pebble lobby hasn't spent any discernible money out here that I am aware of (Kodiak), beside stickers and a few radio ads, but the mining corporation has funded several of my scientist friends to tag along on their research projects as "unbiased" observers, they return with a more positive perspective of the mine and it's obvious impacts, (I read brainwashed, but they're no dummies).

Good luck and I hope you get the funding for your trip, and more importantly I hope more people will be informed as to the possible devastating impacts of the mine, enough so to work through the system in order to bring this issue to the forefront where it belongs.

well, the more publicity the better on this one. It is not just about this mine, it about the precedent being set. There are claims all over the region and if they get this one through the floodgates will open. There is no way this mine or any largescale hardrock open pit mine will not have devasating effects on the waterways downstream. It just doesn't make sense to do this above the greatest salmon nursery on earth. oh yeah, and fuck that mine

The Save Bristol Bay success and hope lies in the outreach. They've done a phenomenal job and a lot of companies have really stepped up to help people become aware of the dangers. The Alaska Sportman's Alliance has been absolutely phenomenal and rabid about getting support anywhere and everywhere.

The 2 biggest opportunities for setting a positive fisheries and even environmental precedent in the next decade are Pebble and Klamath Dam Removal.

well said, pebble mine and the dam on the Klamath will set the course. We either choose to destroy what is left, or move forward with protection and restoration.
