So the pin in my thumb comes out in 30 minutes. This thing goes through one bone, into a joint, through that bone and into my palm area.
The doc is giving me NOTHING for pain just slicing a stitch, grabbing it and yanking it out.
I can't help thinking that this is going to be a bad thing. Anyone else experience this, should I by a 5th of JD first? :eek:
Having seen the x-ray, all I can say is good luck. JD sounds like a good plan.
I crushed an index finger when I was 13. Same thing- big ol' pin throught the tip of the finger and all the way to the back. Later, I had two smaller pins going through just the first two proximal bones.
The pins come out easily. It will likey feel uncomfortable, but it shouldn't hurt bad. If it does, wack your doctor.

You should be ok with an anti-inflammatory, over the counter med. The bone pain is minimal with pin removal. If you were having a cortical screw removed then I would ask 'kindly' for a painkiller.
When they pulled the pin out of my wrist, the Doc had to make several attempts, because the pliers kept slipping off. He had used a little local and the pain was OK.
I had a similar pin pulled out of my thumb. The pain was brief but it was intense and make no mistake it was there no matter what the lieing fuck tells you before he yanks.
Not sure if it's relevant (it's surely too late), but I had a pin removed from my heel about ten years ago. No freezing or anything; doc just clamped something that looked like a manual drill over the end of it, cranked a few turns in reverse and that puppy slid right out. An odd sensation but that was it.
Hope your experience was similar.

I got 4 pulled out of my arm many moons ago. I, as well, had a manual drill used on me, albeit whilst under the influence of the fluffy demerol injection. While floating in the air, many feet above the bed, all I could hear was "squeak-squeak-squeak" as the pins squeaked out of the tightly bonded bone. Appetizing eh? I then tried walking out of the room, only to find that my legs had been replaced by useless protuberances. Damn jackals.Quote:

ok, the deed is done. Could have been worse, could have been a helluva lot better.
My wife talked to the doc, convinced her that I really was a big wuss, and the local was given. Hell the local really hurt. A scalpal slices a 1/4 inch slit in my finger and then the tugging begins - and never ends. The doc calls in another doc and she goes at it for a while. They widen the cut to 1/2 inch and tug some more. I hear the pliers slipping off the pin again and again.
I taped the whole thing (well, my wife did) and they were going to town on that beast. 20 minutes after it started the pin comes flying out.
The last minute was fully felt as the local was pretty well worn off. They then prescribe some lortab and send me off to fill it. By the time I drove across town and had it filled I was in a state of pain much worse than at any time before in my life. Right now I have 2 lortabs, a valium and a percocet in me and I hurt.
If I get around to it and if there is interst I will post the highlights of the video of the procedure. It is pretty bloody and fairly gross but cool in a "holy shit" kind of way.
I took pictures when the docs pulled the pins out of my arm last spring - weird sensation, but no pain to speak of.
Edit: I gather our patient will be recovering from a JD anesthesia and pharmaceutical hangover.

fwiw ~ I've had similar experiences with pain meds. I don't think there's a pain pill out there that I haven't tried for my knee. For whatever reason, Darvocet seems to be the one that works the best for me. (Downside is that it's apparently highly habit forming after 5-7 days.)
