Barcelona recs

Headed to Barcelona towards the end of next month. Will be reading up on it in the coming weeks, but thought I'd pick the collective brain in the meanwhile.

Will be there for 3 full days, with wife and 5-year old. Staying in the Gothic Quarter, just off Las Ramblas, near Placa de Catalunya. Other than the obvious La Sagrada Familia church, what are some not-to-miss sights, restaurants, food, drinks, etc? Any great photography spots/viewpoints? We don't mind walking or taking public transportation. Not into shopping.

I had the best meal of my life in a Catalan restaurant in Barcelona when I was there in 2007 with my family. The meal lasted several hours and there was at least 10 courses, it was amazing. My Dad will know the name, I'll ask him. Amazing food in Barcelona.

Edit: Restaurant is called Can Pineda, another great one is Passadis Del Pep.

Parc Guell, La Boqueria, La Champagneria is also a fun and cheap dining experience.
Don't carry anything you wouldn't mind losing, the pick pockets are very good.

5yo + a "several hour" long meal = you're not enjoying life much.

Not much to add, Fuzz, but based on your nighttime pix from Krakow I'd say go check out the Carrer de Montcada which is where the Picasso Museum is.

Guel park has Gaudi-designed features. It's on the hill and has great city views.

Montjuic Castle looks over the harbor. It's a short ride by metro, funicular. And gondola. The funicular leaves from the metro station, which is very cool.

There's a ton of museums including the famous Picasso museum. But if you have a 5 year old, don't miss the zoo! It's the best zoo I've ever been to.

Eat paella, drink sangria. The calamari is cheap. Sadly, Barcelona is one of the top pickpocket locations on the planet. Be mildly paranoid about that fact while riding the metro.

It's a great city. Have a blast!

The places that specialize in the Iberico ham are the best. Everything Gaudi is worth seeing as is Picasso. Gothic Quarter > Las Ramblas for exploring and finding places to eat. Lots of cool street art around too.

Thanks for all the tips and keep 'em coming. Have definitely heard about the pickpocket problem. There's no way I'm going without my camera gear though, so I'll just have to keep an extra careful eye on it.

Yes, several-hour-long meals are probably not on the cards. Although our 5-year old travels very well. He's fine walking/hiking 3-4 miles a day. Loves museums even if for only for a couple of hours (he actually spends time looking at each piece and asks me to explain/analyze them). We always eat the local food no matter where we go (no trying to find a place with chicken nuggets or pizza). So all in all, it actually works out pretty well.

It's a great city to just walk around, especially in the Ramblas area. I liked all the gaudi stuff, especially sagrada and batllo. The palau de la musica catalana is pretty cool too if you can catch something there. I have some pictures of gaudi attractions here and everything else we did in Barcelona here.

if you want to see Sagrada Familia you gotta buy tickets on-line, in fact everything is so busy I think you will have to buy tickets on line for any tourist attraction

In just about any big city in yurp the free walking tours you find on-line are worthy, meet in a popular square at the blue umbrella, you will get a well spoken masters student talking their way thru grad school, they speak good english or whatever language you signed up for, they are not free of course they want a nice tip and will work hard for it, if the group of 12 tourist give 5 euro each its a pretty good morning, if you hate them don't give any money

I did a tour in Lisbon, in Porto, I tried to do it in Barcelona but buddy said you are the only person who wants to do the historical trip but the street art tour is leaving shortly if you like ? so I joined it

The street art in the bario you actualy don't realize is there until somebody points out an instalation 30 ft up the side of a building or there is a 50ft banksy at a community center you would never find, Barcelona is pretty cool for street art if you wana know about street art ... I had no idea

a good craft brew in the bario with 39 beers, the bar tender is Danish but speaks english

apparently they really cleaned up Barcelona and especialy the Bario for the olympics, there is a street with hookers, the guide told us " if you had walked down this street pre-Olympics I guaranty you would have been robbed "

somebody had issues with the spanish police in that other thread, I never did but I stayed in a BnB above the popo station and they don't look like someone you wana fuck with IMO

I rented a bike and toured all over the place

stay away from La Rambla at night

go check out Camp Nou

Good tip above about getting tickets to Sagrada Familia.

The Picasso museum is awesome.

Tapas, tapas, tapas…and the wines. Sangria and Cava.

Walking around is really great, just keep petty crime in mind.

Just walking around I stumbled across the Kiss of Death statue in the Poblenau Cemetary, and it pretty much blew my mind.

BTW super easy to get around with the subway which also goes to the airport

so staying in Barcelona there is probably no reason to rent a car

unless of course you are doing a car tour

We just spent 9 days in the Pyrenees and 5 days on Menorca. Do recommend. Zero desire to be in Barcelona in the summer with everyone else.

just about anywhere will have good transit but you wana look at the map to make sure you got good transit

I stayed towards the airport and then it was just a bus to the train for the airport

Depends on what you want. The Avenida Diagonal area is calmer and quieter. It gets busier and noisier as you go toward the Gothic Quarter. The beach area is an option too.

The woman I was traveling with got us set up through youstylish, and I was pretty happy with the place by Avenida Diagonal.
