Hey guys
I'm wondering how you people pack and protect your gear (camera and a single, basic lens) while you ski. I'm using an ABS airbag backpack so the options are limited, especially in volume, and I'm not sure how best to go about it.
Maybe specific 'bags' to put the camera in, padded somehow? In case you're wondering, its a Canon 600D
Any tips on this?

When I'm not skiing with my camera pack I usually put my camera in a lowepro holster pack and put that in my backpack, and an extra lens wrapped in my extra layer if I want an extra lens

This has been discussed, there are a couple of threads on carrying cameras while skiing. It's definitely a case of different strokes for different folks.
I've never carried an extra lens when skiing so just carry the camera and attached lens in a Thinktank D20 holster attached to a Lowepro chest harness. The camera is always quickly accessible this way and a flat-chested faceplant is the least likely way to fall.

Think Tank Digital Holster 20 with a couple of carabiners/webbing to make it work with a pack as a chest harness. The holster bag seems tough enough to somewhat protect it if it's going in my pack.
Spare lens generally goes in a Lens changer bag. I don't think this would actually provide much protection, so it tends to get packed semi strategically around a spare layer.

at times I will carry an extra lens skiing, I just put it in its own specific lens case that attaches to the holster pack. When skiing down, I'll throw that little bag into my backpack but the holster stays attached to the sternum strap
I'm using a Cotton Carrier mounted on my shoulder strap of a Dakine 35L pack.
When it's time to descend, I plan on sticking it inside the pack inside a Zing pro-DSLR cover.

it'll only hold a single camera and lens, but that's fine, as I want to put it in my backpack while skiing. It's rugged, can stand up on its own and has a waterproof base, and is generally 'weather resistant' apparently. Camera is suspended in a hammock sort of construction, which should add to the durability, I hope
I'm thinking of putting it in the pocket closest to my body, and put the shovel behind it, possibly even in the outer pocket furthest away from my body. Downside with that last option is that my shovel would be in 2 different pockets... probably best to try and keep them together.
