I just picked up a couple of old school solly 997's and would like to mount them myself. I have mounted freerides, dynafits, lots of tele's, etc... but never alpines. Would like to mount these myself. I searched and couldn't find any info for a template or anything on the web. What's the best way to mount these if I don't have a jig?
Take the screws out of the bindings and figure out where they need to be on the ski, use a little ruler. You know about boot center and all that I assume. Hold toe/heel piece steady and stick a pick, like an ice pick, or a small screwdriver in the hole and whapp it with a hammer on the end. It makes nice indents and you drill there after you do this in each hole. Be precise and have fun.
i've mounted every solly binding i've ever owned. really nothing to it if you're handy and have common sense. i take stock lifter plates and use those as templates. Tape them onto the top sheet at the desired location with electric tape (wrap it around the ski)-- tape it real real real tight so the tension on either side of the plate roughtly centers the plate between the edges. A tight tape job will also allow you to make micro adjustments by feel and eyeball. Sounds absurd but it actually works (for me at least). With the template in place, punch or mark the holes and then remove the plate and check your work before drilling. If it looks off, try it again. A ski with good topsheet graphics helps as you'll have a lot of places to get your bearings. Just try to forget the fact that you're dealing with whats likely a $400+ piece of equipment.
