iPod Shuffle

this thing is frickin awesome.
Got my wife a 30GB ipod, but the battery drains too much from the impact of jogging, so I got her the new shuffle.

$150, 1GB memory, plugs right into USB 2.0 port.

THE SIZE OF A PACK OF JUICY FRUIT (and weighs less).

Un-fricken believable.
Basically, this is a flash memory USB drive with tiny play, volume, next song buttons.

With iTunes, you can "auto-fill" the ishuffle with random music from any of your playlists each time you plug it in. So with 30GB of rock, I can add random 1GB units of music for on the go convenience. Or, you can make custom playlists.

Previous players were around $100, but only 256k storage.

How many songs is 1 gb??

According to apple, 1GB= 240 songs. I got mine a few days ago and I agree that it's sweet. :biggrin:

I was killing time in Best Buy the other day and I was shocked at how small some of the MP3 players have gotten. I forget the brand, but there was one that held 256mb worth of songs and was literally no bigger, perhaps even smaller, than a box of matches.

MP3 (8 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, AAC (8 to 320 Kbps), Protected AAC (from iTunes Music Store, M4A, M4B, M4P), Audible (formats 2, 3, and 4) and WAV

I think the 1 G holds closer to 480 songs. I sould know later on as I might go buy one. I'll give the test report later.

interesting concept, but i wish there was a display.

fyi. 1gb = 1,000mb so you're looking at 200 songs at 5mb.

This isn't THAT complicated. if all your songs are about 2mb (they're all short or they all have shitty quality) then yeah, you might get around 480 songs on it.

In '99 I bought a creative nomad (1st generation? before the nomad II, and NOT the jukebox) that had two 32mb flash cards...I thought it was pretty much the shit... but my ipod that holds 20gb is both smaller and lighter. how small is this stuff gonna get until it's just no longer practical?

btw, fyi -- 1gb = 1024 mb

As for the display...sure, it's cool..but the only time i ever look at the display of my ipod is when i'm in the car. who watches the display when they're skiing or running or....?

I have the small one. It rocks.

I'm fine with having "only" 120 songs or so on my person at a time, though, and I don't care about seeing the name of the song playing.

If you want to go right to a song, you switch it play in order (or not) and click until you get there. It's not that hard.

In the random mode, it's like a little tiny programmable radio station in your pocket, and even the small one holds enough songs to keep it interesting.

Must agree, I have had the smaller one for about a month now, maybe a little less. Battery life rocks, haven't run out yet, and i have not charged it for three or so outings. 120 songs or a little more sometimes, is plenty for skiing, skinning, whatever. Load up your favorite ski movie songs and rip it up. Bubba sparks currently is being played in mine.

If there were a display it would cost a LOT more. Those little LCDs are bucks. Also the battery life wouldn't be as good.

How long before iRiver or one of the other Asian companies makes it for 2/3 the price? Any bets?

Another alternative to the shuffle is a creative n200

I'm picking one up ASAP to replace the trusty old 5 gig. I'm told that the stores have plenty if you live near one - it will take a while to get one in the mail.
The thing is so small, I'm thinking of a making some sort of neck (!) strap for skiing - that much closer to the Giro Tuneups.

The alternatives don't play AAC music, which all of my albums are encoded as...

I know, but (this may sound weird) I would like to get it right up on the neck so I don't have to open the jacket to hit the controls. Just reach around to the adam's apple area to ff or volume up/down.
