I'm heading out this weekend for a trip primary to the Winds, but will also have Thursday evening through Saturday morning in Jackson--staying downtown.
1. Would appreciate recommendations for:
2. grocery store for stocking up pre-Winds
3. outdoors store for stove fuel and other stuff we can't take on the plane
4. fishing guide for Friday fishing for 2
5. cheapest place for bear spray
6. good food/beer in town
Maybe 3 and 5 are the same.

3. Propane? Have two cans mags left me last week you could have, little green things. Otherwise Kmart, or Sports Authority. Quality outdoor gear: Teton Mountaineering, Skinny Skis.

I eat/drink at the Snake River Brewery a lot when I'm in JH. And I thought that new-ish Albertson's near the Hwy 22 and 89 intersection seems like a good place for a pre-trup shopping binge.
where are you going in the Winds?
try calling the Orvis shop/Worldcast Anglers and see if Brian J is available for Friday. standup guide and a hell of a skier.
the Smith's is cheapest by far. anywhere in town for canisters and bear spray: they're all priced about the same and none of the retailers stand out in terms of service. maybe avoid the Jack Dennis store because their radio commercials are annoying as hell.
For food a little nicer than the bro river brewpub, try the Rendezvous Bistro, by Albertson's. It's really hard to figure out which restaurants in Jackson are worth the generally ridiculous prices; R.B. is the closest I have come to find for a decent priced, tasty meal in Jackson. Also, the Silver Dollar bar at the Wort hotel (just W of the square) has some great pub food and a pretty nice fancy dinner menu as well. Silver Dollar for the best burgers now that Billy's/Cadillac is gone.

+1 on the bistro, and of course you can't go wrong with the brewpub. Make sure you stock up for the winds. yea, there's stuff in pinedale but past there, not ... well, anything. Also, and this is more relevant if you're going south, to a place like big sandy, those trailheads are FAR from jackson (big sandy was 4+h IIRC) - take that into account while planning.
I saw a bear in my yard about 45 minutes ago. Black, maybe 130-150lbs. So small there may be a sow lurking around here somewhere too. That is the third black bear in the last month. That I've seen. Ullr only knows how many cruise by at night. Anyhow, it's a drought year and these bears are down from the hills looking for food. From what I can tell the berry crop is very poor and the wild flowers dried up fast so the cuttworm moths are probably sparse as well. That's their big summer feasts that are plentiful enough to gorge on. Many bears are likely to be under weight and it's these kind of dry summers that make for bold and sometimes desperate bears in september/october. At a certain point, their fear of starving to death overcomes their fear of you. Hyperphagia. Be real careful about food odors on this trip.

3. You can buy bear spray at Smiths and Albys. The best reasonable place for basic camping/backpacking supplies is The Sports Authority, on Broadway. Both gear shops in town,(Teton mtneering and Skinny Skis), are good but you'll find better deals on the same can of bear spray and fuel at the Sports authority.
4. There are lots of good guides around here. Any outfit you pick will put you on fish. If you are into an afternoon trip on Friday, I might be able to swing it for a few beers and shuttle cash. Feel free to pm if you'd like.

6. As with most mtn towns, Jackson has lots of eateries, most of which are very over priced for mediocre grub. The Brew pub is reasonably priced. It won't blow you away for food or beer quality and it's noisier than all hell from 5:30-9ish. Fun atmosphere tho. Most locals dig the Rendezvous Bistro for "affordable fine dining". Fun menu and atmosphere. Food is decent - very good depending on the night. Pinky Gs pizza has good slices, hot sammies, wings and whole pies. Prep for a skid/JH hipster fest. Worth it tho. Those are just a few. R u looking for fancy dinner dining? Quick and easy?
Breakfast - hit D.O.G. On glenwood st. Excellent b burrito. Take out.
Nora's in Wilson for sit down
Lunch: sweet water, picas or Eleven, (women seem to like this place???), for sit down dining.
Take out: backcountry provisions or creek side mkt for Sammie's.
If you wanna head to Wilson, I usually hang out at the Calico, on the village rd, for happy hr. I'll buy u one. Over priced menu in the dining room but good and reasonable bar menu, especially before 6.
thanks for all the data guys. Good tip on the Sports Authority--didn't know you had one. I don't need anything but basics, so I'll just hit them for stove fuel, propane tank and bear spray.
@Tye: I'll get my bbq here at Hog Heaven and seek other culinary delights while in Jackson.
@Lone Star and Akokskis: Saturday night in Pinedale and then hiking up to North Fork Lake for a 4 night basecamp, so Pinedale to Boulder Lake trailhead Sunday a.m. for the stroll.
As for food, looking for good stuff, but a casual environment. Nothing over the top. The Bird looked good online? Probably that place or the brew pub one night and then maybe the Bistro place the other.

Oh yeah, obviously, if anyone has any specific recommendations for fishing or anything else in that part of the Wind River Range, please let me know. This will be my first trip there.
I forgot about the bird! Great spot. Burgers and the cheesesteak are awesome. You're looking at a $15 burger but they use quality regional beef and grind it everyday. Beers are fuckin pricey there but nice deck and away from the tourist area.
