Renting a 4WD in Utard $$$$$$$$$$

Chaaaaaa Ching!

Damn, $100 dollars a day is what I am looking at to rent an SUV while I am in Utah. At least that is the best rate I have been able to find so far.

Has anyone found a better deal out there? Do I really need a 4WD while I am in country, or could I get away with a front wheel drive???

These are questions that must be answered! The trip to the promise land out of PNW Hell is only 9 days away!

This has been covered elsewhere but you can take the bus from the park and ride for like $2 if the canyon is on chains only restriction, just be sure to get there early before it fills up. Or you could buy chains for the rental car. I have done the latter in Tahoe and it worked great during a 3 foot storm. Hertz had some subi wagons, maybe these would be less $$$. Release rented an awd minivan from thrifty or payless and it was somethin like $65 per day.

I was able to rent a mid-size SUV, Ford Escape from Hertz for $65/day for 13 days.

Only needed it once to get up BCC during a storm.

As has been said, LCC and BCC have buses. Get there early and take them if it's puking -- the canyons won't be on chain control unless it's seriously dumping. Then rent a little FWD compact and save about a zillion dollars.

Also, if it is
A) puking
B) your going up the canyon the same time as the buses

Then

A + B = not getting up the canyon ANY faster than the buses. Chances are fairly good you will end up behind one.

There are a few places to safely pass but even if you do it only ammounts to seconds or minutes saved. The speed of vehicles in the canyon, when the buses are running, is pretty much limited by the bus speeds - which are plenty when the roads are shitty. IMHO the only real advantage of taking a vehicle up the canyon is its use as a lunch and gear locker, but if it is puking you know what skis to take and can rent a locker or take a small pack for lunch and clothing.
