What camera mic for DSLR?

I'm mostly a TV editor/shooter, but do a small bit of corporate client work every year and have a year long gig doing 1-3 run and gun style testimonial videos a month. Client loves the DSLR look and I own a 7d so I'll probably use that (would love to get an FS700 for this, but it wouldn't see much other use), but I'll need a good on camera audio solution for when I don't have time to rig a lav and run the H4n. Anyone have any recommendations?

I've used the Rode videomic before and thought it sucked - although that was before the new 7d update that gave us audio control. I'm thinking of spending the money for the Rode stereo videomic this time around, but if there's anything else out there people are liking I'd appreciate any recommendations.

it all depends on how crazy you want to go. you could get a nice sennheiser shotgun, buy a hotshoe shock mount and go SLR to 1/8". Really the sky is the limit. The Rode videomics suck, but they are cheap.

Good point - guess my budget's the limiting factor here. I have a shoot next weekend so maybe I'll rent a good mic for that and see how it goes - I shoot this camera so rarely it almost feels silly investing money into it.

Then use what you're used to (scavenge from your ENG gear). Hotshoe mic clamps are cheap and available at your local camera shop. Shock mounts are overkill, because you're only using it occasionally and are on a budget. In my opinion there is no need for a 2 channel (stereo) NatSound mic for anything other than nature films.

I'm still waiting for miniXLR connectors on a 5D.

Good call on that too Tipp. With a 7d I've always stuck to the H4n, but with some audio control now that beachtek could be a legit option.
