I need 4 sets of rotor bolts and saw that they are just m5 pan head. I've got plenty of m5 pan head socket machine screws used for ski inserts that were mad cheap, I'd rather not spend 6 bucks a set from pricepoint if I have plenty laying around. One thing I can see as a concern is that the 3mm allen key socket is going to strip much more easily than the Torx. Has anyone had trouble with this in reality? Does anyone else run socket cap screws in place of the torx bolts?
I bet your local shop has some used torx bolts that they'd give you for free.
You want a healthy dose of loctite on those bolts, and over time, they can be pretty resistant to coming out. Like you said, a hex bolt runs a greater risk of stripping. Other than that, hex is fine.
I've used the socket heads with loctite in the past, no issues. If you were close I'd say come by and grab 12 Torx, I've got a bunch laying around. If your going to buy hit e-bay. You could buy a set of colored anodized ones off e-bay for $6 a set.
^^^ don't use anodized bolts on your rotors. If they're anodized, they're aluminum. Aluminum rotor bolts are a good way to find yourself needing new teeth. Don't use aluminum bolts for anything that takes serious stress.
