I'm done w/ planning ski trips months in advance

Seriously, I'm not going to do it anymore. Usually, I take a trip out to Whistler in January. Historically speaking, they get more snowfall during Jan. than any other month, so I'd usually plan them for then. And by November, I have my entire winter mapped out.

For multiple reasons, I didn't do that this year. Couldn't do that. Quality over quantity this year, I said. And, by shear dumb luck, this looks now like a brilliant decision.

Unless you're going to hood or Mammy in July, every trip anyone on here ever goes on is taken with the hopes of scoring pow. So why on earth am I planning things months in advance? Based on statistics? The weathermen can't even get this week's forecast right, let alone months away (w/ apologies to Red Baron ;) ). If someone had told you that the WA resorts would be CLOSED in January due to lack of snow, you would have told them they're insane.

Living in MD, airfare has always been a stumbling block. But w/ Southwest and some others, that's not much of a player any more. Sure, it might cost another $50-$100 than if you'd made it a month in advance, but I'd gladly trade that to know that I won't end up flying 3000 miles to ski boilerplate in the fog.

Since I'd couldn't plan stuff in advance this season anyway, I'd been thinking about this before the season even started. Then the holidays hit. The PNW was a soggy wasteland, while Tahoe was bracing to get pounded. And then, God bless 'em, base and bill and APK and gonz sacked up, forked over some Jackson's, and, in a phrase that is likely embedded in all of our minds, went straight into the maw of the gurge.

And scored huge.

Totally fuckin sickbird.

So that's it, I'm not planning stuff in advance. When the storms start stacking up, and things are starting to look good 4-5 days out, then it's time to pull the trigger. And no matter where "there" is, I can be confident there will be maggots there.

I planned way in advance this year. I've already booked febuary's trip and march's. Yours is a lesson I may learn this year.

its the only way to go....with a sport (obsession) as weather dependent as skiing, you need to rally on short notice to get the goods when the snow flies....fack plannng.

Everytime I'm in the 495/95 area I think about just dropping by, but haven't done it yet. It's mine own fault for leaving it with you. If you ever go skiing around here I can get it from you.

Apparently Ski Chalet is having a clothing sale starting this week. I bought some Patagonia Capilene stuff for 50% off in Tysons.

I almost never know untill the day before if I am lucky I might know a few days in advance.
Also I have a new girlfriend this year that has had a hard time not planning the trips a while out in advance.
I have to give her credit for still sticking around when I will leave at the drop of a snow flake!
Still waiting to figure out if a trip to Steamboat is called for this Friday!
I guess we all just have to keep our eyes and ears open.
2 of my good ski buddies work for the feds in the weather feild, I have never met anyone who can be wrong so often and still keep getting their pay check every week.
I do have to hand it to them for all of the good storms trips that we have shared that they have called.
So, as you might guess I still do not know if I will make the summit in JH yet. I guess if there is a storm I will be there if no storm I will be sticking around Fort Collins

I've learned to go with the flow. Watch where the storms are and follow them. The best skiing can be had by last minute planning and a good road map. See ya on the slopes, somewhere!!

a few weeks ago i committed the cardinal sin and booked a trip for a couple weeks from now. no real snow in the forecast between now and then. i will now light myself on fire. i hope someone will learn from my mistakes.

Next year I will DEFINITELY be a partner in crime. To anyone just about any time (well any long weekend or holiday, that is.) :the_finge to you, legal incapability to book shit!

Oooooooooh... that hurt and I take offense... but it was still funny.

my friends and i went to snowshoe this year and we planned way ahead and got fucked it rained the whole time and totally sucked hairy donkey scrotum then three weeks later they got 26 inches in two days damn you mother nature and your mind games no longer will i plan that for ahead this year has tought me a valueable lesson that mother nature is a very fickle and vengefull hatefull old woman or im an idiot who needs to stop blaming my stupidity on mother nature but that couldnt be it

I'm going to go against the flow a little here...maybe it's cause I consider powder a bonus, but I usually don't get uptight about conditions. My last two trips (and my next) have pretty much revolved around the Summits so dates were locked in well in advance. Sometimes pow was scored, other times it was spring corn. Didn't really matter as long as I was having a good time and doing it with good people.

To me it's a lot less stressful (and usually cheaper) to get things sorted in advance and then just enjoy whatever gets thrown your way. When it all lines up it just serves to feed your addiction and keep the spirits up during the times when it doesn't.

Sick and ashamed and happy (and, having said all that, it truly would have sucked to have had Whistler and/or PNW plans right about now and I'd probably be scrambling like mad to rearrange them if I did),

I'm with you Gin. Most my trips(NSR) I do not plan until last minute. Something about skiing makes me plan way in advance. My theory- any resort has more snow in Feb or Mar than Florida does. Can't really go wrong.
