On the way up James Peak on Sunday I spotted this mountain in the distance that looked like it would be a great ski. The picture is taken looking north by northwest over berthoud pass just below the summit, the peak is way on the horizon marked with the fuchsia arrow. I thought it was Quandary Peak but it seemed to close to be Quandary, what do you think?

From Berthoud Pass you would have to be looking to the SW to see Quandary. Is that what you meant?Quote:

Are the twin peaks just to the left Greys/Torreys? If yes then I'd guess Sniktau (sp?). don't you have a fucking topo map or something?
A little closer even than that it could certainly be something in the Woods/Parnassus/Bard series and could also possibly be Hagar/Pettingel (basically west of Bethel).

If you were on James Peak looking over Berthoud Pass, you would actually be looking ESE. Which I think is the case based on the shadows in the photo.
I would have to agree that it is a random Gore Range peak, but if I had to guess I would say Mount Powell. It is one of the northwestern peaks in the range and from the photo, what my eyes can see of it anyways, it looks to terminate a ridge that include two close peaks just to the south. and has (what looks like anyways) a skiable snowfield on a southeastern exposure.
I have a bmp of the peak using TOPO software, but I'm just a JONG here and don't know how to post pictures :confused:
Obviously you were not a boy scout :) From the peak take a bearing with your compass (don't forget to adjust for magnetic north) then go back home pull out a large topo of Colorado and draw a line from James peak in the direction of the bearing. When you cross the exact peak of something close to 14,000 you have found your mountain.

Here is a panorama I took this weekend from the top of Colorado Mines Peak. I think it has your peak in it but it's a little larger.

I believe (If that peak is ~40mi away and you are pointing SW) you are looking at one of the following: Peak 10, Crystal, or Pacific (all in the ten mile range between 13.6 and 13.9 kft)
Edit: on second thought that could be Grizzly (divide range 13.8) or Peak 1 (tenmile range ~13)
