my left knee

hi there. for over a year now i have been getting popping in the back of my left knee then pain afterwards. i saw my doctor on monday morning who sent me for an xray which will take 2 weeks to come back. my doctor says its something to do with the ligaments. do u think i will need surgery on it. its very sore 2 walk on and also hard 2 bend the knee when it pops:(
