Crows v. Gulls

At home, we have a shitload of crows. They live in a few big colonies of thousands upon thousands, and if you look up (most folks don't) you'll see them commuting from their colonies to their jobs in the morning and back again in the evening along well-established crow highways. No gulls at home.

Here by the ocean it's all gulls, all the time. Haven't seen a crow in weeks. Quienes es mas macho? It seems like the crows own the land and the gulls the sea, but go to any dump within a hundred miles of the coast and it's all gulls, all the time, which leads me to believe that gulls are more badasser than crows. Gulls just don't feel like fucking around with farm fields and suburban yards, they just go for the gusto and don't fuck around.

So I guess I'm a Gull guy.

Around here it is Magpies and Ravens. The Magpies own the valleys and the Ravens rule the Mountains.

Magpies run in packs or gangs, 15 to 20 per Crewe.
Shoot one and the rest get very pissed and let you hear about it (for some reason or another they are a protected species)

Up in the high country the ravens will pair or trio up but seem more solitary. They are super cool to watch when it is windy, they surf the currents and pull all kinds of stunts like double flips and barrel rolls. They are about flying for the pure fun of it.

You see ravens eating just about anything, I think to Ravens, all manner of garbage tastes like Filet Mignon.

Chalk me up as a Raven guy.

As Bunion said, Ravens are the raddest of the birds.

As for Flock of Seagulls, everytime that song comes up on my ipod, I turn it up- way up.

Fucking skyrats the lot of them.

Ravens are not rats.

When I was a teenager, I lived on acreage in Northern California. Ravens cruised around there all the time, croaking and chortling. On walks they would sometimes follow.

One day a big old raven took up post on our outdoor picnic table. Just sat there for an hour or two until we finally took notice. I went out to see what was up. He wouldn't move but would hop to the other side of the table when I approached. I noticed that he had something like a straw stuck in his mouth and went back for my dad.

My dad took an hour of sitting at the table, finally got him to come over and removed the piece of hay from his gullet. Raven hung out for the rest of the afternoon, then wnet over to the bamboo grove and died. I guess the removal of the hay was not enough and he croaked.

I love seeing ravens on the mountain. They seem to come around right before I hit my line. I believe they know that I am about to do something fun, and they appreciate that.

So I just went out to run an errand and it turns out it snowed like literally 300 yards from here. Not a flake here, but right up the road there's like 2-3 inches of snow. A bit warmer right by the water, obviously. Gulls are cruising around like they own the place, not a crow in sight. So all the crows are fucking around in the snow somewhere while the gulls are just flying around eating garbage like usual. I mean I love snow, but that's a win for the gulls, right?

Ice, Gulls would fucking eat Crows. They dont co-exist. The Cape has its Gull areas, and its Crow areas. But there are no Gull/Crow areas. The Crows stay away and hide in the woods. The Gulls go wherever the fuck they want, but theyd rather eat half eaten hot dogs and trash down at the beach over worms and grubs.

I see this all the time... hawks love swipe crow eggs, so crows always gang up against them for aerial battles:




Falcon vs. Seagull gets a little bloodier...

At home it's often mockingbirds v. crows. Actually mockingbirds against everybody, those fuckers are aggressive. They'll divebomb the fuck out of a crow or a hawk or a lawnmower, honey badger got nothing on mockingbird.

Never seen a mockingbird fuck with a gull though. They must know better.

Fuck magpies; skyrats, indeed. Why they are protected, I will not know. Crows? Meh. Gulls might as well be looped in with the magpies. Ravens are BA.

Back home in Oregon, it was crows and blue jays. The blue jays were just as cunty and terrible as magpies. Horrible and annoying flying rats.

My old man would get so pissed at them he took to arms. We kept our boat in the water in Ct. one winter with a bubbler around it. One of a few in a huge, empty marina. The gulls would drop clams on our boat to crack them open. Not the dock or the parking lot. He would shoot at them with the 1935 .22 I still have.

We also lived near Pepperidge farm. Talk about crows, holy shit. "some kids I knew" would sneak into the woods and shoot them off the dumpsters with .22's

Damm kids.

I highly recommend seeing the band "Flock of Assholes" if you get a chance. They're outta Worcestah, but I saw them on a boat cruise outta Rowes Wharf and it was pretty awesome. Obviously, they're a cover band for Flock of Seagulls for you dull ones out there.

here in AK crows live on the coast and ravens live inland, gulls are fucking everywhere all summer, all kinds too
