Well, I got the job!

Well, I got the job with good pay and they told me I would most likely get a raise in March if everything worked out. I told them I could start Monday and they said they actually didn't need me until mid-February so I said that would be fine (thinking YES!, I can make the summit!). Then they changed their mind and said if I could start on Monday they would have stuff for me to help them with since their year end is Jan. 31 so it looks like no summit for me. :( but I guess thats the way of the working world. It feels pretty damn good though. I sent out one resume and one interview and got the job. Thanks to all the maggots and their input in the job interview thread.

So who's advice ended up being the golden ticket?

Don't ever take the first offer! They are probably lowballing you! Get what you're worth.

I don't think this is typically the case for entry level jobs especially accounting and finance. You should have a pretty good idea what you are worth and if you don't know check out places like the vault.com. Chances are there are 20 other people lined up for the job if you start to push back. Unless you have a better offer somewhere else to use as leverage don't haggle over salary, they'll be plenty of time to do that later.

I was expecting them to lowball me, so I already had a top price in mind as a starting negotiating price. They offered me a dollar less than that and made it clear that it was only a starting wage and would be bumped up in March. There were 20 other accouting openings in town that are open that pay just over half of what they offered me so I wasn't going to argue. I could have probably got more, but considering they had 150 applicants I wasn't going to risk anything. Even if I didn't get a raise in March I would still be happy with what they offered at least for a year, plus the experience I will get will be invaluable if I were to seek a different job in the future.

Could not have said it better myself. Get in the door and then move up, ask for a performance review after 3-6 months, I did and got a raise.

Hell, took me three weeks, 3 interviews, an essay to see what I am made of comparing two similar products and killed it before they hired me! 102 applicants and I beat out the 35 they took a look at. My essay clinched it, as once I was hired I got my bosses old computer and say the 3 finalist essays. Holy crap, some of them even had misspellings. Hmmm, spell check? :nonono2:

They asked me what I am worth, told them a bit high on the number, they came back with a very nice offer, close to what I asked for, with room to move up. One raise in the bag and about ready for my second preformance review. I asked for a raise on this one based on my sales performance, which I spelled out in my document to my boss. She is the intermediate boss and so Upper Management is looking over her suggestions as we speak(which hopefully means another raise and/or promotion), but we will see. I have met all my goals and then some from the last review, over 100% in EVERY catagory, so we shall see.

Erica got some good news today on a probable job after internship is done in September or so (worked with them before during school). Guess where it is, Logan. But private practice, part time and more money than I make, lots more. Not really wanting to head back there to move, but if this set up works, we could be sitting very, very pretty. Like I could buy the splitboad I want, new skis and boots, whatever I want, buy dads Honda Shadow Ace 1100, with only 1500 original miles on it, 1999, loaded. The list goes on. :biggrin:

Ok, enough, long way off.

Some say once you move to Logan, you cant get out. Kinda true, moved out but drive back in 5 days a week, more if I am going to ski/ride Beaver MT.

With student loans and all that after internship, may not be a bad idea. Looking at what COULD happen with inital numbers, out of debt in a year with getting one car paid off. That would only leave my Subie car payment. Oh man, that would be killer. :the_finge

Staff accountant. I'll be doing all the fun stuff accountants get to do :wink: instead of simply sitting in A/P or A/R doing data entry. The funny thing was that I went to school for 5 years because that is what is required to take the CPA exam in North Dakota. I still plan on taking and passing the CPA exam, but I was never a fan of public accounting. I didn't even apply with the public firms last September when they do their hiring and was ridiculed because everyone told me that there was no way I could get a good job in the private sector without doing public work for a year or two. I decided to take my chances and if all else failed I could get work with a public firm next fall (I know some people at a large firm in town so getting a job would have been fairly easy). This job is going to be a lot of work, but it also has a lot of variety so I'm really looking forward to it. I still haven't told them that overtime work cannot conflict with my curling schedule. We just overtook first place in one league and are a game out of first in the other. :D

Congrats, Doood! At least you won't have to buy a new wardrobe or be punctual at this firm.
