SWEET loaner board....wish it was my own!

A friend has been loaning me this sweet board on an 'extended' loan.

I've been surfing on a 7'4 thruster that had a nice shape and was light...but not quite the flotation that I like.

So, here's what I got for a loaner board: a sweet vintage Dextra 9'6 Custom.

This board likes to move out!!!! But because it's so narrow, it is a little squirrelly initially, but once it gets its momentum, it's a FINE ride.

I especially like that beautiful custom fin.

Anybody know anything about these Dextras??? Someone said it's worth a bunch of $$$$....now I'm scared to use it.

Beutiful fin. Is it in laid wood? Don't know about Dextra, but I've been offered up to a grand for my Rick. Would never sell it unless I was -need the money broke. Nice looking log.

According to this thread, Dextras were all pop outs, and the 'custom' was just printed on the board. So, no, not worth a lot.

EDIT: A bit more research (still page one of Google "Dextra Surfboards"): These were sold at Sears...

The owner feels pretty much the same about the his board....he likes the way it rides and would not sell it, regardless. Too bad for me.

But I was pretty surprised at what I read in the thread youi enclosed, as to its worth so I did a little googling on my own.

Chubby's has an old Dextra 9'0 for sale now in their vintage section that doesn't seem nearly as nice and without the cool fin, for $450.

Malibulongboard's "surfboard museum" has records of a Dextra 9'6 that sold for $1200:

I never thought it was a custom-made board (the fin was a custom-made add-on about 15 years ago...according to the owner)....just had "Custom" as part of its name, as I don't think most custom builders actually put "custom" on their custom boards.

I agree that old vintage boards are not going to bring the bucks they did ($1200 for the Dextra 9'6) a dozen years ago...hell, vintage cars aren't bringing ANYWHERE they were 12 years ago...but I'd say as it is in really decent shape it's worth more than a five-spot.

All I know is that it really is a smooth riding board that likes to dig in with a passion.

Looks kinda of pig-esque . That D-fin is nice, but the placement seems odd? I feel like usually the trailing edge/tip will be at or maybe even past the tail. Regardless, you're stoked and that's all that matters! Where are you located, looks like a sick house

Re: vintage boards bringing in the $$, ain't that the truth. My buddy has a retarded quiver (need to find pics, seriously stupid) but fell on some hard times and has been trying to sell off some over the past few years. Not getting offers NEAR what he would have in 05 or so.

It is funny, to me looking at a vintage board is like looking at a vintage car. The old one looks cool, but I don't want it as it's modern brother will blow it's doors off. If you like the long board, go try a Walden Magic Model. A few of my buddies swear by them.

That's just a dockhouse of the place I'm staying at in Virginia Beach....yes, VB has palm trees...damn strange, if you ask me. Lately, I've been spending summers on the East Coast up in maine, and then I found this place....croatan beach is just a five minute bike ride away, as is Rudee...it has FAIRLY decent surfing and a pretty decent beach scene. But the waves aren't anywhere near like they are in Cali....hence the need for a long-board. They just had the (L)East Coast Surfing Championships there a few weeks ago....not that the ECSC brings in any big names...mostly groms, but some good ones.

I would like to buy that longboard, but he won't sell...plus there is no leash plug on it. There is a custom-shaper that has a shop called "Austin Surfboards" that build beautiful boards...and not really high-priced at that.

Placement of the fin?? That might just be the photo...I was trying to make it look like an old jet plane tail. But the trailing edge is at least 6 inches or more forward of the tail. That would be pretty weird to have the trailing edge of the fin PAST the tail, eh?. I think the size of the fin makes up for being slightly more forward, perhaps. But I don't really know enough about the dynamics of the old-school longboards to really tell.

EDIT #2:
Might as well throw in a plug for Austin Surfboards....they have some of best-looking boards I've seen graphically, and they are great shapers, too.
