The Life Aquatic questions

So I saw this movie when I was really high. I loved it, thought it was hilarious and did a good job of getting at real issues without slamming you over the head in a Hollywood way. Acting I thought was superb and the film itself was beautiful. Some of the Bowie songs in Portugese were great and I actually stopped at Tower and listened to the soundtrack and the submarine rescue song was still perfect and so dry comically.

I saw this movie with a friend of mine who was also pretty baked and he thought it sucked. Am I crazy?

Yes, you are.

I saw this over the weekend with my family and was thoroughly disappointed. I love Wes Anderson's movies in general (Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, The Royal Tennenbaums, etc.), but this one was only mediocre. It didn't live up to the hype at all.

The reviews from my family were highly mixed. My stepfather walked out of the movie ~15 minutes before the end and thought it was a terrible movie. He was pissed off that he wasted the time and money on the movie. My mom felt about the same as I did - it was only o.k. My stepsisters didn't really like it, but didn't hate it. My brother thought it was pretty good, but not great. I've heard of no stellar reviews from anyone except Tuffy and the yahoo who writes reviews in the Sac. News and Review.

The humor, style and cadence of the movie either agrees with you or not. I don't think the movie could ever agree with more then a small section of society. The movie rambles pointlessly, easily could have been loads funnier, and is very slow (especially at first). There's some good scenes here and there, but they're few and far between. I would suggest to most people to wait for it to come out on DVD.

My thoughts are the same Uber... I walked out unsure of what I'd just seen. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great either.

I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. The quirky slow pace of all his movies tend to agree with me. That and the odd brand of humor. Although I admit I liked Royal Tenenbaums and Rushmore perhaps a little more. However this one has a few truly excellent scenes and a lot of flavor. I'll reccomend it :thumbs:

Yes, excellent film. Not quite up to Tenenbaums or Rushmore, but I liked it a fair amount more than Bottle Rocket. It was a hell of a lot better than 99% of the Hollywood crap out there. I thought some of the reviews were unfair to it, as they seemed to expect something revolutionary just because it had a big budget.
Anderson is probably my favorite filmmaker right now.

A Wes Anderson movie is like a fungus: Easily dismissed at frst, but grows on you in time.

people are coming down so hard on it cause they only compare it to tennies and rushmore, which are quite easily two of the greatest films of our time.

I too dig W.A. and am a big fan of all his films with "Rushmore" being my fav. I feel that L.A. is similar to R.T., in that the first time I saw R.T. @ the theater, it left me a bit cold....but I have watched it several times since on DVD and it has really grown on me...in fact, I now consider it "brilliant".

I think L.A. will be the same. Saw it last week and was a bit left a bit "cold" by it - moments of hilliarity/brilliance and beauty, with a lot of dry, aimless scenes in between....but, I know over time I will apprecriate it more.

Bottom line: ANY W.A. film, IMHO, is worth going to see/paying $ for in the theater vs. the usual Hollywood drivel....

Bill Muray is the man (i seriously think he should have gottn an Oscar nomination for "Rushmore" - more so than for "Lost in Translation")....

i used to have similar pairs (the gazelle?) when i was a kid, just not in that color combo....got to git me sum of these!

apparently they approached adidas before the movie about them, adidas didn't think there would be enough of a demand for them...

exactly...my friend @ addidas said the same....they didn't make any "official" team zissou addidas roms....bummer....but they may consider a limited run....some fanatics (google it) apparently have posted a "how to make a team zissou pair of roms"....that's committment!

I walked out of this movie with a huge smile on my face. Something about the cast, the acting, the story...just everything, was very satisfying. It's been a long time since I've walked out of a movie happy that I spent the money to watch it. It's tough to compare this film to past Wes Anderson movies because, to me, it was completely different. Where Tenenbaums and Rushmore were dark, this movie seemed far more heartening. The final scene where they're walking to the boat, for some reason, just put it all together.

This is by far one of the best movies I've seen in a while.
