Beaches in Alaska
-
Ak beaches are some of the best in the world.
My favorite beaches are in Ailalik Bay just past Seward....more rocks than sand, and the 'sand' is more like course black pebbles, but the view of glaciers and blue bergs amidst the backdrop of mountains is just flat-out gorgeous. It's like being surrounded by one huge ice cathedral.
Too bad more small cruise-boats from Seward harfbor are coming in every summer, but early in the morning before the tour boats get there it is uniquely serene.
Ailalik Bay, along with the more remote parts of Glacier Bay that the large cruise-ships can't access, is one of the most surreal and fantastic parts of an already fantastic AK coastline. To really get a feel for it, go there by sea kayak...about a two day run from Seward on correct tides.
EDIT: It's also cool when a tasty opilio washes up on the beach....but it sure helps the taste if they're fairly fresh and not already half devourede by sand fleas!!!

Aialik Bay is one of my favorite places on the planet, but for the most ultimate awesomeness in that region, keep paddling to Taz Basin on the W side of Granite Island. I also liked Natoa cove, Three Hole Bay and "Chitty Chat" cove.
