I'd like to do a little bit of kayaking this summer. I can rent a boat from the U for a day at a time so I want to keep things close to home, so two friends and I are looking for something near SLC that's safe to do with little experience and low risk just to kind of get into it.
Alternatively, if someone is interested in showing us around one of these days, that would be even better.

When the weber was running fast and high? I was working on a river frontage property in Wanship over the weekend and the current was nuts and way too high to make it under the bridges between Henefer and Taggart.
Wow, forgot about this thread. Where's the put-in/take out on the weber? And I'm talking about whitewater. I've always been stoked on moving water and kayaking looks like it's pretty damn fun.

Fun section to float, but as I said this time of year you may not fit under the old bridge past henefer. Rivers running around 800 CFS right now. Check out the photos in the links below to see what I'm talking about (first photo is the concern):Quote:

Well, we learned alot about kayaking today. We figured that the ogden river from rainbow gardens to the dinosaur park were doable, and got there and pretty much decided not to do it right away. Drove to the kayak park, and were entirely let down. the park was nonexistent, but we got in and floated it anyway. There was one little drop, MAYBE like two feet. Paddled about a mile or two farther just dicking around to where our third friend picked us up.
Got back to sugarhouse and figured we'd send it down the little rapid/falls at the end of the creek in sugarhouse park, boy were we wrong. Both of us flipped right away and couldn't manage to roll over, so we both bailed and just swum out and grabbed the kayaks. Definitely going to my buddy's house tomorrow to learn to roll in his pool before either of us get back in any legitimate moving water.
The henefer to taggart section of the weber is a great place to learn. It's class 2+. But, not right now.

Wait until the henefer to taggert is listed as a medium level to get out there. That will probably be late june or early july this year, at the earliest.
The town section of the provo might be good too, but I've never done that.
You are right though, you need to learn to roll before getting in the river. Even then, learning to kayak without a knowledgable guide is dangerous as shit. I did it years ago and survived, but you'll be swimming, dragging a boat out of the water more than you'll be kayaking . Boating's a lot of fun, but it takes a long time to learn. Eye of the tiger, young grasshopper.
I actually snagged one of the last spots in a kayaking class at the U, so I'm gonna learn most of the basic skills I need. I'm glad we fucked up the other day because it definitely taught me just how powerful fast water is. We're planning on doing the weber river when it's good, and in the mean time I'm just going to keep looking for something that's good to do now.
What about hittle bottom to the BLM on the colorado? I saw it on eddyflower and it seems like a great excuse to head down to southern utah for a few days.

You're stoked to be getting into kayaking, Utah is going off right now. It has been a super sick spring and there's lots to go. Ogden Narrows is all time right now. You're glad you did'nt put in on Rainbow Gardens at this flow. When it gets lower its a good beginner stretch. Hen-Tag on the Weber also.
Utah kayakers talk shit to each other here: http://www.utrivers.com/f2-open-whitewater-talk . That's a great place to hook up with people. Also the Utah Whitewater Club is pretty active and does trips, Brandon there is cool. Rapid Progression Kayak School teaches lessons if you want to take more. Otherwise just start giving 'er.
