While rummaging through my storage to dig out the Iggies and NKOs I realized I hadn't cranked the bindings down from 11 all summer.
Am I hosed?
The rust-encrusted edges and sandpaper smoothness are the least of my worries.
Also went to REI to get some wax. Screw the $20 Swiz hydrowhatthefuck wax. I got the $6 Snowboard wax. Will that make a difference?

You'll be fine. When I used to manage a rental shop, I did a test. Turned down one set of 100 binder is the spring and left another unchanged. When the were preseason tested in Nov., their was no difference in results.
I love Jong Din Satay but the spring rolls are over rated.

As for the wax. I used some cheap ass snowboard wax on my skis last season and it seemed ski of after a run or two. You pay for what you get.

I just steal wax from my XC ski team that being said,
If you want maximum speed go with swix, If your just waxing to protect your sticks go ahead and use the snowboard wax, thats what its made for.

best wax of all time is one-ball-jay. i used to be all into the temp variable blah blah and threw some one-ball universal temp on and haven't gone back. wicked fast guy.
plus i have a buddy named jason with one nut, which is hilarious.
One layer of wax ain't gonna to shitola for the skis. If you are that concerned about it, you need to wax consistently over the season. Also, a good base structure will give you more speed than a good wax as it lasts much longer.
Yeah, skip the fluorinated waxes. Faster, yes, but they wear off quicker. Save your money for a Swix block and wax more frequently.

On a related note, I left my boots unbuckled all summer. Will they work? I also didn't wash a pair of socks and didn't fold my pants. Will they be OK?

But a single waxing will prevent further deterioration of the base, particularly if you're liberal with the wax and spend some time with it. Structure is more important, but just about any temperature specific wax (snowboard wax is no different, aside from the saying 'dude' part) will get you going more than most people.Quote:

New Plan:
get a big block of green wax, and a big block of blue, and a small block of purple, use green when its real cold, blue when its like 20-30 purple for spring skiing, rewax after every day in the spring corn has the tendensy to be real abraisive, you might want to rill your bases too, I know I know it requires an extra tool, but base prep is fun and rewarding and it makes you go fast:D
If it has flouro-carbons in it don't buy it- It'll make your skis fast for two runs but in the long term it dries out the base making your skis even slower than before. Flouros are used for race day and that is it. And that cheap ass snowboard wax- it's parafin wax- you know the shit used to wax curbs for you skate and make candles.
Recommendation- Buy a stick of CH-7 Swix wax. It's a middle temp wax that is perfect for west coast skiing. In the long term it will make your skis slippery and also due to the relative hardess, it will last longer through the day and even helps protect your bases.
But burning flouros is so much fun especially with out a mask :DQuote:

Hey Pu, if it's that $6 All weater One Ball Jay(?) stuff from REI, that's what I used all of last season. Works just fine, but after 3-4 days you notice that the skis are sticking a bit. Reapply, ski more.
My newest invention is Old Guy Wax. It seals your bases and all just like any other wax, but it contains sand and iron filings so you can't go too fast. Point 'em down the fall line, you'll still never hit 20 mph. I think there's a market for this stuff.
My other idea is the Fuzzybase(tm) base grater, it's kind of like a cheese grater. Run that thing up and down your skis a few times and you'll be lucky if you move at all.
You can get a tube of Old Guy Wax along with the Fuzzybase (tm) base grater for only $19.99, operators are standing by.

Wax, I buy Swix Uniwax for about $35 cdn for a big block from MEC...it works fine and it's cheap so I wax often.
START GREEN is bullet proof .
I think Nordic specific ski shops, as in XC fitness/racing is the place to find crazy deals. The self tortures are all into the newest concoction. Yesterdays waxes can be found extremely cheap.
