Ski help please

What up mags. The quick skinny is this, I'm rocking 07 Gotomas 183cm with Freerides. I've been doing the backcountry thing the last few years and haven't bothered keeping up with the times.

I am headed to AK for a heli trip this spring and I want to charge it, so stepping back into the downhill gear. I figure a new downhill setup is in order. I love the Gots but thinking a switch to rockered is in order. I can ski anything in pow, my question is what can handle the variable conditions, aka the crud/mank/shit what have you. I've been looking at the EHP's, CRJ's, JJ's etc., am I on the right track. I want a ski that can do it all, stable at speed, can straightline as well as make those do or die turns. Something I would ski daily at Alta in all conditions. Thanks for the help. Peace out!

Three come to mind and can be had cheap
185 Mothership, or 195 if you got big balls.... 111mm underfoot, tip and tail rocker, slight, but helpful, and two sheets of metal....stiff, fast, 24 m radius so still have some turnability, awesome -- my current charging ski.

Rossi RC 112: Haven't skiied em, but they sound like the tits, stiff as fuck, tip rocker, 112 underfoot, 188 in size. kill everything.


192 Bro model.... probably find this one used, but its 192, stiff, and 114.5 underfoot... don't know if there is any rocker, but it's another baby killer.


Obviously there is more, but those three are oft-discussed on here, and very well loved, I'd recommend one of the first two, but have only skied the mothership, and a 185, fyi, skis a bit longer than that. They all are stiff, but have some character for owning the steeps, I'm pretty sure with all three you will need to power up speed before things get fun.

Barons on 191 carbon Lhasa's. Or Dukes.

You can also just rent what they have at the heli-op. All the guides were rocking Pontoons last time I was up there. I brought some EHP's, my buddy some Praxis. They all worked. Definitely go for something surfy if you like to carry speed in the pow.

If you think you're going to show up and CHARGE or face a lot or "turn or die" situations, then you going in with the wrong mind set. Skiing in Alaska is still just skiing and safe conservative skiing will be the TOP priority for your guide.

The biggest difference between resort and heli beyond the obvious method of how you get to the top is the consistency of the snow from turn to turn. Since the slopes don't get hammered with skiers every storm, you can drift and surf without having to deal with choppy stuff underneath, even with just boot deep snow. Can make for some fast skiing. Less or reverse sidecut, stiffer if you like, tip rocker. You don't have to go huge in the waist either. It's not Utah blower up there. Float won't be an issue.

I thought about renting but I think I would rather have my own gear and get it dialed as opposed to learning new gear in that environment.

And while I know you are right about my mind set, I am amped up right now! I mean c'mon it's my first trip to AK. I will be better in a few days but right now I am going to charge it and go HUGE!!!! When I get there I will play it conservative and safe, staying alive is way more fun.

Your post is quite old but I thought you may still be looking for some pow skis.
I think something like Movement Fly Swatter or Elan Boomerang would pretty much thick all the right boxes. Fly Swatter skis come with some camber under foot (not much), huge rocker, some negative sidecut which makes them float over powder like a boat, but you can read some more info here: http://www.movementskis.com/products...lyswatter.html

Boomerangs are more traditional rockered skis with positive camber underfoot so will be perfect in straightlines but in the same time camber and small turning radius will give you allow to ski trees etc. More about boomerangs you can find here: http://www.elanskis.com/pcc.asp#xpat...erang#lang=eng
