So my brother has an older Stumpjumper with a rigid fork and wants to get some suspension up in there...He was checking out a bunch of forks and found that his head tube diameter is 1 inch and most head tubes these days are 1 1/8 inches. Apparently RST makes forks that fit bikes with 1 inch head tubes. Are RST forks any good? If they are good forks and stuff he'll get one, but if it is a better idea to get a new frame he'll probably do that...
Any info would be appreciated...
I had a buddy go through this 2 years ago. It was really hard for him to find a good fork with a 1 inch steerer. It took him about 8 months but he eventually found a marz Z2 fly (XC fork). I don't know if they make them or if people like jenson still carry them, it is worth calling around.
I would not trust my body to an rst fork, I would rather walk. Sorry, that's the truth but I am a big heavy guy and I ride reasonably hard stuff with consequences. If I was riding the paved bike paths along the river then that may be a different story. I don't his specifics or the riding style, but my vote would be for a newer ride if he is serious about riding.

I tried to that a year and had a couldn't find anything decent to fit a 1" head tube. I'd rather stay rigid than use rst shocks, my gf's cheap-ass $200 bike path cruiser has them if that says anything.
Most other parts should swap over easy enough.I just toured bike shops until I found a decent HT frame with 1-1/8" head tube, bought new shocks and swapped the other parts from my old-bike. After I bought the parts that didn't swap and upgraded a few things, the total was under $600 for a Brodie HT with a bunch of Race Face and XT components.
Find any bomber with a bolt on crown. Then call marz. and ask about their 1" steer tube replacement. They will send you the 1" crown and tube, replace the 1 1/8" with the new one. have fun.
hunt on ebay too, but I like the bomber idea better.
ebay sometimes will have some new stock that is older and 1"
keep in mind that if anything else needs replacing it might not be worth it a new bike (low end) is $500 and if the shock is $200, and he needs a R rim ($50) doesn;t like the stem (headset replace and stem $50) and a new drive train ($100 and just try to find 7 speed parts) then it is better to have a city/loaner bike and just buy a new one with all new parts.

that sounds like a plan. by marz. you mean marzucchi? so get a bomber/marzucchi fork, get a marzucchi 1" steer tube replacement, replace 1 1/8 bomber steerer toob with the marzucci 1" steerer tube...Quote:

as of june, my shop could order 1" marz. forks new.
check with you LBS to see if this is possible.
they need to actually call marzocchi and ask if any of the 85mm forks (like the mx-comp ~$250) are still available...
your local shop will probably not want to do this, and will probably tell you to f-off, but make them call. also make them get out their QBP catalouge. it has the 2004 1" forks in it.
the 2004 stuff w/ 1" is probably not sold out yet.
edit: also, rst totally suck. stay away.

Depending on how much (or little) your brother wants to spend and what length steer tube he needs; I have the Specialized Future Shock I took off my 19" S-Works Steel hardtail available. It doesn't need to be rebuilt, but I will include a new rebuild kit with the fork for $50.
