best filter/cartridge for fine particle cedar dust

I have a 3M 6000 series mask used mainly for spraying paint/stain, but I have a big log shell project starting with a ton of sanding/grinding. The standard cartridge isn't filtering fine particles as much as I need considering it will be all day for a couple of weeks. The guy at the paint store said "You should be fine" with the standard cartridge, but after only a few hours I could feel it in my sinuses. I looked at the 3M website and there's a vague chart listing many different options for "particles". Anyone know the best set up for potentialy dangerous cedar wood dust?

sounds like you might have more of a fit issue with mask itself than with cartridges. it's been my experience that when working and wearing a mask for long periods its very likely that dust will find it way in! if your working in this environment a lot and care about your health, something like this may be the way to go: 3M Powerflow™ Face Mounted PAPR Respirator HEPA System

My First thoughts too. I've been running some P100 cartridges (AO Safety 95061, no longer available) and they have been catching the fine fiberglass dust I've been creating. Plus no smell from the solvents....


Look at point of creation capture too, i.e. can you stuck a vacuum on your sander? Bosch makes a nice sander that creates it's own suction:

I have been really surprised at the stuff it sucks up. Lowes has them.

Agree with Svengali that the Powerflow may be the way to go for true protection.

If connecting the vacuum to the sander isn't possible then perhaps consider a cheap box fan placed in front of you blowing the dust away from you while you work. Then your mask won't have to 'work' so hard.

Get a Fein sander and a Fein vacuum with a HEPA filter and profit.
