I'm going to be moving to Butte for the next couple of years for school. It looks like Disco is probably my best (and cheapest) option for a seasons pass, especially after reading the thread on it. Are there any other hills in the area that would be a better choice or have good deals right now / before season starts on passes? I don't mind driving ~1hr+ to get to the hill, I just don't really know what is around there and worthwhile.
Yep, Discovery is by far your best bet (for terrain, proximity)
Could also do either Maverick near Dillon or Great Divide north of Helena, but those are a bit more of a drive. Maverick is only open thursday thru sunday... I think the same for GD(?).

Great Rock Divide is fun, but I would avoid spending any significant amount of time there unless you hate your skis and want new ones.
Consider a Frequent Sky Card at Big Sky as well. That plus a student ID = $40 off day passes and a couple free weeks at the beginning and end of the season. It's a little outside your 1 hr range, but it'll be worth the drive once in a while.
1. Buy a Prius and drive to Bozeman.
2. Buy a sled and some maps.
3. Buy a house for under 30k.
^^^ I would love to see a prius pulling a sled, just to see people's brains explode from the cognitive dissonance.

4. Invest in bottled water.
I know people who live in boze and drive to butte for work. I think they are crazy but you could always drive for pow at bridger/bigsky.

I looked at buying a house. Just don't have the cash for that + school, but they are so damn cheap its tempting. House + 2-3 roomates = free accomodations, but I'd have to find the cash to buy it with, and who'se going to lend to a 19 yr old student lol
I'll definately be driving farther once in a while. I'll be getting the disco pass for something more local.

I wouldn't drink the water. And make sure to check out the Front St. Market. It's like a little slice of Brooklyn in Butte.
Bozeman and Missoula are about equidistant from Butte, meaning even Snowbowl is possible as a day trip, and Lost Trail, Showdown and BS/MB are within weekend range. Heck, so is Jackson for that matter. Butte's really in a great situation, only you could argue it's a bit low on charm (and high on my list for places with brutal windchill).
The Disco pass is now something like $220 -- hard to beat.
But note that day passes to all these areas are dirt cheap. Disco is $35, Maverick is $30 on weekends, and Snowbowl is like $39.

A Disco pass is in order for sure. It's got great terrain, and the best terrain faces north, so the snow quality stays good, but the snows are hit or miss, sometimes they get very little and sometimes a shit-ton.Quote:

Definitely grab a Disco pass. As Rasputin said, it can be hit or miss. But, when it's a hit, Disco is usually a home run. There is some fun touring in that area too and you can bet you'll have the hills to yourself as long as you stay away from the popular sled areas.

+1 for disco (terrain) and LT(snowfall).
-1 for Great Divide. What it lacked in pitch it made up for with a lack of snow and amenities.
+/- for Snobowl. Snow seems hit and miss but terrain seemed good.
