Step it up, support the CIAC
BC skiers in Colorado, you don't know how good we've got it. Many state don't have a staffed avi center making daily updates and forecasts. Despite been a government agency, they rely on private funding. There are many name I don't see on this list. Also, if you are affilianted with any organization (shop, school, club) interested in this type of thing, pressure them into donating. The FOBP will be on this list as soon as Strand gives me the check book.
Once again it's time to send in your renewals. There are 2 catagories, 30 &
45$, and of course we will accept more!

Why renew?
First, a pesky, weak, but strengthening, El Nino is acting up in the Pacific
Ocean. What does that mean for our winter? Well, you can re-up and keep
track through-out the winter of course!
Second: There have already been a couple of human triggered slides in
Colorado.
The first was on October 18th on Mt Sheridan in the Mosquito Range. This one
started at about 13,320 ft on a NNE aspect. It was from 10" to almost 2 ft
deep at the crown. Hard slab on a convex roll, (36 degrees) ran around 800
vertical ft, & ran to the ground, failed probably on a depth hoar layer. No
one was hurt.
The second was on "The Battleship" slide path near Silverton on October
23rd. The Battleship is near Ophir Pass, this slide was around 500 ft wide,
N aspect starting at about 12,300 ft. It ran 1,000 vertical ft, 1 ft deep.
Looks to have failed at a depth hoar layer. No one was hurt.
So avalanche season is upon us. The best way to keep up with the winter
ahead, is to join the Friends of the CAIC. We are really trying to bump up
our membership this season, so don't be afraid to sign up friends as a
Christmas present, or even better, tell everyone how great the program is,
and we'll get the word out to even more people.
