New York, 9/11 and the Current Election

I must admit after seeing the current political flame war going on in the Ski section of this board I find it quite interesting that Bush advocates use 9/11 as the reason we need to continue to support Bush. Yet when you look at polls conducted about who New Yorkers plan on voting for in November, Bush has never been the candidate of choice. If you look at CT and NJ where the vast majority of the remaining 9/11 victims lived, those two states are also most likely to go against Bush.

Doesn't anyone find it extremely ironic and/or frightening that this is the case.
I guess it's just easier to write this off as a bunch of Northeast liberals who don't know what it takes to protect us from terrorists than to think maybe we have a President that has made serious errors in judgement both before and since 9/11.

I don't know of anyone who's swapped parties since 9/11-do you? those areas have always been mainly democrat

Don't you think they would vote for him if they felt Bush did a good job?

for an event that resulted in a huge force of solidarity from within the us and without, i find it appalling that this administration has unrepentantly squandered such a huge opportunity to set things right. as someone who has experienced the events that day first hand, i feel that any reference by this president to 9/11 is a huge "fuck you" to anyone who has experienced that tragedy.

I have to diasgree with you.

9/11 was as cliche as this sounds the defining moment in the Bush presidency. Without 9/11 increased homeland security, war in Afganistan and war in Iraq do not occur. I don't think you can not allow him to discuss it as a number of his policies have been a reaction to the event.

I'm CUBUCK on this one. I hate Bush (No? Really?), but for him to campaign w/out mentioning 9/11 and his response to it is insane.

Now it just so happens I disagree with most of Bush's actions following 9/11, and like non grata I am immensely pissed at his squandering of international goodwill; but there are a lot of people who have fond memories of Bush in the wake of 9/11. That's who Bush's appealing too.

What really pisses me off though is the way the republicans tie Bush and 9/11 together so strongly. As if Bush is personally responsible for every good thing that happened in the wake of 9/11, as if to dislike Bush is to approve of 9/11, as if to criticize Bush is to spit on the victims of 9/11.
This is, of course, just politics. But it hurts when my city's tragedy (born and raised here) is used as an emotional argument for a man who frightens and infuriates me so much.

All I can remember is watching the TV and seeing that man appear for his first public announcement following the attacks. He looked scared and unsure of himself. He looked like he wanted someone else to take his place, like a little boy lost at the mall. I stopped listening after a minute or two and left the room. The one moment when I really needed a strong president he totally and absolutely let me down. I hate him for that.

you are right, of course, that this president (as well as any other if they were in his place) has to bring up 9/11 as the impetus for various policies and actions put into place. i was just sharing my blanket thoughts as to the way bush has handled "post-9/11" america and overused the event in his rhetoric.
