Small surf towns Australia/New Zealand

So I just got work visas in Australia and New Zealand and I plan on heading down there after the winter ends in Telluride. I know I'd like to spend some time in the Taranaki region of New Zealand, but the sheer size of Australia seems to make it hard to research kickass small towns with good breaks.

Anyone here done the working holiday program in conjunction with surfing?

Looking for a good town with (at least semi) uncrowded surf, don't really care about too much else, except for maybe finding some kind of work. Any advice is appreciated, I don't really have any idea where to go.

I live in a small town called Bulls (where we have a play on words, everything has abull at the end of it, police are consta-bull, toilets relieve-a-bull, subway submerge-a-bull etc) we are about 2 hours south of taranaki region. Go into www.windwand.co.nz and it will tell you everything about small surf beaches up that way, some of the best in NZ. There are heaps, so easy all there on that web site. I think you will definitely find what you are looking for.

I can only add where I stayed; Bellina and Byron, then up to Surfers, way fun to go out, girls whatever!! Waves were ok when you could actually score a set, as it was super crowded and it felt like I was in a comp while out there. I was between the two from mid jan to about march, no too long but enough to get an idea.

Heh. Tracks had a pic of snapper rocks one summer paved with people - many hundreds. Fewer people as you head south and the water gets colder it seems. Try heading south from Sydney, down to victoria, out to south oz

Oh ,for sure. Oz sounds amazing, I grew up surfing cold water in the northeast so that isn't a problem it's the crowds, heck I'd rather the water be 40 degrees, but that is changing too, as heated suits are becoming more and more affordable, oh well, keep searching!!!

Uh, Raglan, of course, is not only a sick wave (left) but the town is really rad, small but great. Think Santa Cruz only way smaller. I was there in August of '07 and the swells were pumping. I know there are a lot of farms out there so if you were in to that kind of work you could probably find something. I would stay at Sol Scape. you can rent a caboose or do like I did and rent a camper van and just sleep in that with their hook ups.
