Mammoth a secret??

I was looking at this website that ranks ski resorts in different categories; ie: expert terrain, trees, views, ect. ect. Anyway I came across the category named "best kept secrets" and behold Mammoth is number 10??? are they kidding? sense when has mammoth been a secret, certainly not to people in LALA land

There is some logic to it. 99% of the people skiing at Mammoth come from LA. The big problem, skier visit wise, is the lack of a real airport. That's why Bishop and Intrawest are having such a big tiff over who gets to expand their airport. Whichever one the FAA picks is going to get a TON of business. Mammoth is a real pain in the ass to get to. It's 3-4 hours from Reno or 5 hours from LA.

Yeah, I agree with Arty. Everyone knows about Mammoth, but no one can get there easily.

By the way, does anyone know how long a drive Mammoth is from Las Vegas?

It took me ~5 hours from Mammoth to Vegas, but it was late spring, and the road we took would be awful if there was any sort of snow on the road (I don't remember the highway number, but we turned east at Big Pine and went past the Bristlecone Pine Forest).

I wouldn't exactly call Mammoth a "secret" since I think most skiers know of it. However, it is a less-skied resort. SInce it's such a pain to get to, it skied almost exclusively by people from LA. Even the Bay Area skiers rarely make it to Mammoth (could you stand to drive past Kirkwood?) I think there are a lot of people who would really enjoy Mammoth but have never made the effort to get there.

edit- I meant to say: Mammoth sucks, go to Vail. It really sucks right now. October isn't a good month for skiing, and Loveland and A-Basin have done a much better job grooming their trails.

That would be Hwy 168 or 268, as I recall.

AD, if ye head north out of Vegas on the 95 and make a left turn at the third brothel (Moonlight Ranch?), that will take you through Death Valley and dump you out near L.Pine. I think it's CA 190, but I forget. It's about a 4.5 hour drive.

Whoa! Why go that way? Was 395 closed? 395 runs straight through downtown Reno, and the Airport is right next to it.

That said, 395 can be hell in a storm. A few years back I did the drive from SF to Mammoth. It took 7 hours to get there. On the way back we had to drive in a blizzard. That added 3-4 hours. It sucked big time.

Not quite, Arty. No one wants that airport. Bishop was supposed to have it, originally (which makes the most sense given that Bishop's weather is less frenetic), but the citizens fought it. The FAA has given MILLIONS of dollars to expand Mammoth/Yosemite (what it's now called), but the Sierra Club is holding it up. The latest article on the airport debacle is here with the FAA threatening to withdraw the committed funds.

By the way, the proposed flight plan is to fly out of Dallas and Chicago only, with the push toward mid-week skiers. Even if this goes through, it would be years before there's a flight out of San Diego or San Francisco, let alone Los Angeles, to Mammoth.

Someone I work with used to fly regularly to Inyokern Airport. One day he got on the flight next to someone with ski boots, started chatting. Guy had booked a flight "to the closest airport to Mammoth" without realizing that was still 170 miles away.

I did the above once many years ago, and it seemed much longer to me. Not sure though.

DO NOT go through the Bristlecone Pine forest (highway 168) during the winter. I did this during that new years storm last year, and it was the scariest drive I've ever done. Fog, snow, and an unplowed, twisty, steep road barely two cars wide equals ten mph for more than forty miles. Also, I didn't see a car from the time I left the 95 in Nevada till the time I hit the 395 - about eighty miles. If I'd had trouble, I'd have been fugged.

A skier who lives in Vegas told me that the best way is to turn off the 95 heading toward the 168, then turn north on some road that ends up connecting up with Benton Crossing road which comes out near the airport. Definitely research this one though.
