A-basin 10/23/04 TR

I was in Boulder for a wedding, so I was planning to ride Saturday morning at wherever and on whatever. My brother finishing up his undergrad degree at Boulder so we rolled up early and arrived around 8:30 am just as they loaded the lift.

One run, one lift, perfect temp.....BLUE SKIES, NO WIND! A beautiful day indeed.

It was extremely crowded, and took around 45 minutes or so to do a lap. It seemed that the whole world showed up to ski one run. It was pretty hard, bumpy, and granular, with the bottom section being the smoothest and the only section to let the skis rip a little. Ended up taking around 6 runs, enjoyed an O'doul's on the sundeck and then took a run down Loveland Pass on the way back. I hiked up about 3/4ths the way to the top and skied some pretty good fresh for the first couple hundred feet but it was still extremely rocky....but hey its not bad at all for October, and on all natural snow.

While you were snapping those pics Saturday morning, Shera and I made first tracks down Loveland pass from the top. Skied a wind drift all the way down, it was knee deep. I later in the day joined Below Zero at the Basin for the worlds largest snowball fight, it made standing in the liftline fun.

Its crazy that now people are so anxious to ski one groomer that they will wait 45 minutes in line but in the spring the resorts close with a huge base and every run open.

The same itch that gets them to stand in line for 45 minutes for that one run down an icy groomer gets them to take out the bikes, kayak, hiking boots in the Spring.

Funny, I was thinking about that. This was the second wedding in 5 weeks where I took some turns the morning of the wedding. 2 weddings, 2 countries, 2 different hemispheres, with 2 people always marrying each other.

Yeah, I saw those tracks and would have had them on here but I left the digicam on the front seat when I took my run. It looked liked there were some good turns up at the top going down the guts. Right when we left A-basin, the massive snowball fight ensued, classic :D

Wow, I sure am glad I don't live in CO. Mammoth has about a 1/3 of the mountain open, but everything there is skiable, not just the groomers.
