I just found out my sister had a skin cancer on her face removed. They originally thought it was a cyst so just cut it out... but then routinely analyzed it and found it was a cancer. I have no idea how routine this is, or what could be up. They think they got it all (here's hoping). Do any of y'all have experience with this?

It could really be nothing, and likely is. I have a family history of skin cancer (father had malignant melanoma but beat the odds), and am headed in for my annual mole removal shortly. The dermatologists tend to label a lot of things as cancerous, even when they're relatively benign. Hopefully she'll just have to make sure nothing returns.
my dad had some on his cheek. got it removed and has been good for almost 8yrs. and like dex said it's likely nothing.

seldon, all of the best for your sister. In any case, the VERY LARGE majority of skin cancers are benign (ie they do not relapse and metastasize) the real danger is melanoma, and to be more accurate, melanomas with aggressive features. From what you say, the chance that your sister's lesion was a melanoma are actually very, very limited. Just be patient for the final diagnosis (or maybe it was already available and it WAS NOT a melanoma). PS You might have read somewhere else that I am in oncology.
