Official: Soul Purpose Review Thread

Need to watch it again at home to get a little more dialed in feel for it, but initially:

-Nobis killed it liked days of old
-Collins looking smaooooooooooooooth; sick head cams
-Marc Andre seriously steppin' it up with taking the jib to the bc
-Nice JH pow seg
-TGR always seems to come up with something new and they did it again with the nostalgic frame grabs to pics; really liked that
-Thank you for not letting Pierre talk
-Loved new heli-cam angles
-Gnarliest real-life feel ever of AV footy with Will Burks :eek:

3 wishes [whisper voice] (dare I say complaints) [/whisper voice]
-more POW footage; can't believe from a winter that started like last year that that was all you guys could come up with!!!
-soundtrack didn't seem to be as strong as in past shows
-show longer segments; felt kinda MSP-like with going to a shorter segment format of each run - very much unlike TGR of past

As I said above, I need to watch it again - but initially, as always from TGR a strong showing, I think I'd give her an B+/A- :)

P.S. Thanks TGR for ALWAYS letting Utah be the 2nd in line to see it after the JH premier!!! And thanks Z for getting it here for us; you da new mang (sorry Powstash) :)

I pretty much agree with Xover - Nobis segment was awesome, helmet cam footage was great, Collins and Burks killed it. I actually liked the soundtrack though - good use of some old school Metallica did it for me.

Saw Soul Purpose last night and, to be honest, left just a little disappointed. Maybe it's cause last year's flick was so killer. I agree with you on the soundtrack. Usually I'm a huge fan of TGR's soundtrack's with some reggae and some more mellow stuff, but it seemed like the crowd was struggling to let out any hoots or anything cause the music was Cat Stevens, or Yusuf Islam (or whatever the hell his new name is). While there was some great footage, and some killer segments ( I dig all the switch landings), there were no jaw-dropping, hair-raising, pant-soiling segments for me. Last year, I watched Sage's line and just about shat myself. This year, Jeremy Jones long-line off the helicopter was the closest I got. Still--can't say enough about TGR. I'm a skier--and I love watching skiing. Some park footage and jibbing is cool, but TGR always keeps it real with the big mountain footy.

i agree....need to see it again to better formulate the opinion.... (which will happen tonight) ;)

but after the first showing i think the film quality was great, the photo theme was really cool, and held it together through-out, and the amount of powder and backcountry vs jibbing was excellent (aka not as much park stuff).

but i have to say, nothing really gave me the "chill factor" (you know, when the music is just on point, and you're pumped, and the footage is so sick you just get chills) and i didn't go away from the soundtrack thinking, "damn, what was that song?? i NEED that song" I also think they spliced the segments together too quick and didn't give us enough of the "story", whether it be a little more bulgaria or just pulling back to see the entire sick line that so-and-so just killed in whichever mountains -which would have helped with the "chill factor" i think. the jeremy jones heli drop was close, and the pillow segment was close.

i will say, the JH segment was simply awesome, and it was especially great to see some more big mountain female skiers!....lyndsey dyer and meg oster were killing it even if their clips were pretty short.

and like i said, i'm gonna check it out again tonight

Definitely liked the show but I will admit, it was missing that amplitude that we really look forward to. I still get goose bumps thinking about the start of last year's movie. When we first saw it at the Super Show in Park City, I really thought I was going to jump off the balcony during the first 5 minutes. (And no, the overdose of Redbull /Vodka had NOTHING to do with it, the beginning just really got you going; mixing sreaming preachers with Scott Schmit, AWESOME!)

But I'm not complaining, great movie and love to watch it with fellow maggots (great job Z). Always great to meet new maggots and catch up with old ones as well.
Ty, get fixed and come back next year for some turns with the beers. Stump, get ready! :D

All in all a good flick. Marc Andre is going for it in the BC aspect, pretty sweet.

Great to see Tyrone in town, you my friend are one of the best around.

Glad to here Collins was back in old form. Last year I heard the term "Sage and friends" a bunch (speaking of the Collins boys as friends). It seemed weird. Sage rocks the house, but I just remembered the Flying Circus and earlier TGR flicks when Sage got his introduction as one of the Collins boys friends.

So I'm here at the Friday night SLC premier and the early crowd seemed to like the show. Comments on it being short but other than that it was well received.

As for the no reggae comment what about Third World?

I too saw the flick. With the SLC crew. Which included pHunk, altagirl, jayfrizzo, Particle, flykdog, BobMC, Buzzworthy, Woodsy, telephil and I'm sure a whole lot more. Cool to see y'all. Let's rip the Bird and elsewhere come November.

Overall review: not too bad, not too great either.

Lots of big mountain footie, which is nice to see. Some insane ski BASE jumping footage. Lots of landing switch off cliffs. Lots of unstuck airs and crashes. (boo :rolleyes: Jeremy Jones got the crowd going by getting airlifted from a chopper on a rope into an insanely steep couloir, and then proceeding to rip the shizz outta it.

Not too much jibbing. Candide Thovex did indeed throw down however, spinning at least 720 before landing on a rail to riding it out switch.

Not enough pow footage. However, quality made up for what limited pow footage there was. Looks like a few over the head days at Alta were captured as lucky skiers submarined through the deeeeep blower.

Overall, 6/10. Too short, soundtrack was iffy, lack of overall flow to the flick. If you want your jaw to drop, put your High Life or Prophecy DVD in the player and press play.

I'm drunk so I apologize in advance if this seems like a bunch of rambling. I haven't seen Soul Purpose yet, but based on the reviews so far it seems that as a whole we are all looking for the same thing out of ski movies these days. I think what we would all enjoy is a mixture of the past and present. Everyone seems to enjoy the longer segments of big mountain lines with a catchy song to back it up. But, what we really seem to enjoy is the story and soul behind the line. The commentary of sussing out the line, the heli-landing, the build up to dropping in, the entire line whether it be smooth as hell or lots of stops due to sluff's or AV's, and the feedback after sticking the line. I think Immersion had a lot of this and even though it was short everybody has seemed to love the flick. If a movie were to be made with that kind of feel, but mixing that in with the high energy stuff such as ski-base jumping it would probably be the best movie ever made. Think about it, let the skier tell the story about how he/she sussed out a new cliff, or ski base jump and thought about what trick they were going to pull off, show them skiing the line whether it be smooth or not, and then hear their reaction. Its difficult to explain in words, but I think that is what we are looking for as a whole, and sweet pow segments :D . If you actually made it through this drunken ramble I applaud you. :D

I don't know Jamie so I don't know if he was serious or joking..........but if he was serious that makes it even funnier in my mind..........just look at how much mileage his quotes have gotten from people on this board....

Tough to follow up after High Life. I thought High Life had the perfect balance of everything.....Big Mt., Pow, Jibbing, Lifestyle, Jeremy Jones/Travis Rice.....and the soundtrack ruled.

Soundtrack......what Lynx said. I only remember one song....the Jackson segment.

Jibbing, would have liked to have seen about the same amount of coverage as High Life, as long as it didn't happen at Stowe. The movie would have been better off without the Stowe segment.

The trips to Europe were pretty cool, but there was a lack of footage coming out of those trips.....still really well done though.

I was actually hoping to see a lot more of Jeremy Jones and Travis Rice.

I really liked the journal style to the flick. It really tied the whole thing together and made the segments flow together really well.....the story of their season was told very well.

Overall, solid flick....if they lost the Stowe segment.

i seem to remember a lot of chit talkin (around the time of the trailer) about the jeremy jones segment where he gets droped in that couloir. people thought it was overdramatised. my question is, was it? and now to the tgr guys, did you change it based on the feedback?

i wrote this up last night, and then the post disapeared when i hit the submit button..so i will try to recreate..

saw it again...here's my second go round...i'll just start over...

the film quality...top notch. the film editing...-superb. the darkroom/photo montage with journal entry/comments theme -excellent, it was cool and it really held it together throughout and created really good transitions between segments. the music....i hate to say, seemed a bit lacking, which i think is what influences alot of the initial response to the movie. I think it started out real solid, flowing well with and complimenting the filming and editing but in the middle got a bit slow and did not flow as well with the images. mainly noticing slow songs paired with high energy film clips that didn't compliment each other as well as they could. i'm not saying, every song has to be in your face energy, but i think, for example, skogen's segment needed a song with more energy or needed lines to better compliment the slower song, or maybe some use of slow motion in the jibbing and using longer clips instead of cutting from line to line to jump to the next skier so quick with a slower song. it wasn't only that segment, but that was the best example i could remember.

on the other hand, i LOVE the flow of the JH segment, that was just an awesome segment that really sticks out in my memory and had music that worked really well with it. i felt the same way about the utah segment in the early portion of the film as well.

things i'd love to see more of include the sphincter-sized elevator shaft of a chute that collins was skiing, and the whole bit where jeremy jones is suspended from the heli -especially being the last part of the movie, that segment went so quick and then all of suddenn we get "the end". and who was that chick that rammed herself on that step-up? Ouch. i could understand wanting to remain anonymous though....

anyway...other pluses include a good ratio of backcountry,big mountain, and pow to park......marc andre and all the switch pow landings in general, and letting us see them ride it out for a bit, pretty sick..... big mountain skier GIRLS lyndsey dyer hucking her meat and meg oster charging a pow line super SUPER hard -it was short but sweet, we can only hope we see even more next year.....chris collins segment, AWESOME, he kills it......sage, victoria, or course killing it, and great to see jonny law getting after it.

all in all i would give it the a-

and i had to deduct for the warren miller-esqe jeep shots, sorry.... ;)

Soundtrack bitches? Well, your future target audience loved it. My thirteen year old stepdaughter, who's been innudated with every ski flick from the last four years thought it to be the best as far as tunes go...

And she's the typical thirteen year old girl who loves all the gagging Hillery Duff, Sum41, Good Charlotte schtick.

I liked the whole gig...but I'm old and outa touch. Much better critics abound...obvioulsly.

As I arrived and proceed to say "wass up" to all, AC looked in my eyes and proceeded to laugh out loud. Yes, It was ALREADY that kind of night. :D

It was differrent. I have been watching a lot of older ski flicks and trying to see the differences of the cinematography (sp?). Soul Purpose did not ruffle my feathers like High Life did last year.

Like I said, I simply need to watch it again.

Regardless, I heard a lot (and said a lot) of "Holy Shit!" and that is always a good thing for a top notch ski movie.

(met Z arouhd 4:45 at the Box as I just rolled into SLC and some older guys come into the back hope to watch more baseball. Z says "private party showing of TGR's new ski movie, Soul Purpose" and one guy says is a pissy little girl voice "another ski movie, geezzz". It was all I could do to not open my mouth and say "baseball sucks anyway".) Stupid normal people!! :rolleyes:

Well I've ordered the DVD from TGR-Europe - let's hope it was worth it. BTW - any more info on the London showings? Saw something on the site about monthly extravaganzas...

The house jump is just one stunt in particular I’ve been lookin at pretty much ever since I transferred over the second story of the parking structure, I was just finally glad to go back and get it. Next year I’m goin back and I’m gonna land that thing switch, and ride into the road.
