TR Round Top, August 20, 2004

August 20, 2004. The latest date in the post-season (so far) for backcounty turns that Doug I have experienced. The number of turns to distance of hike ratio wasn't very good. But hey, we were skiing in the second half of August. Here is a picture of what we saw on the hike in/hike out:

Round Top, the "W" patch of snow (our destination), and the Sisters. Below and to the left of the "W" patch of snow is the other patch we skied that overlooks Winnemucca Lake.

We got in about a dozen turns on each of our 3 runs here.

The snow was pretty good corn in most places. There were a few somewhat firm spots along with a few surprise soft spots that would sort of "wash out".
We could here the voice of the Wicked Witch of the West trickling out at the bottom of the snow patch, "I'm melting, I'm melting..."
Only a couple of months until the Nice Witch of the North brings back winter. :cool: :D

Man, I'd love to meet you guys one weekend to ski "patches"...but don't think the wife would go for it, considering I just 8 days in New Zealand skiing powder. Something about me having to provide some income, go figure.

I was thinking about you this weekend when we came across some patches on Dicks Peak. There is a nice one but you’d probably need to do the trip with an overnighter due to the distance.

When you said the hike to ski ratio was bad, you weren't kidding... looks like you had fun nonetheless!

You didn't go back up on Sunday, did you? It's probably for the best that I didn't go... I had a bunch of junk to take care of, and I would have been rather sore from a ass-whoopin' bike ride on Thursday, and another one that I over did it on Saturday.

One of these days, we'll make some turns together...

Great photos of you and the kids. The snow looks pretty good. The hike to turn ratio would probably be much more so than Round Top.

I didn't go back up on Sunday. The feet were still a little sore. I did however make it up to Kirkwood to cheat and ride the chairlift to mountain bike. It was cool to see the same patches from a different angle at the top of chair 2. I'm sure that we'll make some turns together sometime in the future.
