Level I Class in Southern CA - anyone interested

I am thinking about teaching a Level I Avi course in Southern California in two weeks. The classroom portion of the class would be taught in Clarmount on Tuesday Feb 24th from 6-9pm and Thursday Feb 26th from 6-9pm. The field sessions would be at Mt. Waterman (lift tickets included) on Sat Feb 28th 8am to 4pm and Sunday March 1st from 8am to 4pm. The cost of the course would be $200 for Maggots. PM me if you are interested. If there is not enough interest or the notice is too short, I will try to put together some dates for March.

Course Content:

LEVEL I AVALANCHE



This course teaches students how terrain, weather, and snowpack contribute to avalanche hazards. This knowledge is used during decision-making exercises in the classroom and in the field session. Students also become acquainted with human factors, which skew effective decision making. The course covers movement through avalanche terrain, route selection/hazard identification, and stability assessments in the field environment. Also focuses heavily on the fundamentals of self, group, and organized rescue. Students complete a written exam and practical evaluation during field exercises. Upon course completion, students are qualified to participate in organized rescue operations.



Prerequisite: Excellent physical condition, since the course requires strenuous physical exertion. Students are generally expected to perform in a variety of snow conditions (including deep snow), hike moderate distances, climb moderate to steep slopes, and traverse steep slopes.

I will be teaching a one day Introduction to Avalanche Fundamentals class for the various SAR teams, LA County USAR, NOAA, NWS, and CERT teams at Mtn. High on March 15th. Some of the SAR teams have requested a Level I course as well. I will let you know the dates for those classes if you are interested.

It is cool to have some avi training down here, I would would be interested in any future dates. I too am out of town for a lot of that (and too far away for evening classes.)

I would love this, but Claremont at 6 is never going to work for me.

I have an option of changing the class to a 7-10pm class if I get enough interest. As of now I have between 4-5 students signed up. Let me know if the new times would work.

Just an aside, but is there any good avi info for southern CA mountains?

Not really. I am currently working with NOAA and NWS to begin putting out Avalanche Advisories for the local mountains. In addition, I applied for a grant with NOAA to put portable remote weather stations at Mt San Antonio, Baden Powell, San G, and San Jacinto. These stations would be used only during the winter months and would then be used in other locations during the fire months. I doubt the grant will go through with the state of our current economy. I do get routine reports from a variety of BC skiers and ski patrollers as to the latest conditions. I will try to post these reports when I get them.

I owe you a PM or phone call. I am interested in the 7 p.m. class, but I need to attempt some schedule juggling before I can commit.

Sorry you missed the class. I had 11 students in this class with the field work taking place this last weekend. On the bright side, it looks like I will have another Level I class at the end of March. Details will follow shortly. Yes I will be teaching probably two Level I courses next year and a Level II course (classroom in S. CA and field work in the Mammoth Lakes area)
