Enviro f@&$ strike again

Tow in surfing will soon be illegal at Mavericks for most of the year to "protect" the ocean. It's a blanket date based closure. I'm sure mother nature will comply when deciding when to make Mavericks break.

This has no effect on me what so ever but it's just another in a long string of recent wins these litigious pencil necked recreation terrorist have had.

Rainbow trout stocks have been stopped in 150+ California lakes until DFG goes to each one and completes an exhaustive EIS making sure there are NOT any special frogs.

We're a couple months away from blanket seasonal closures for dirtbikes in TNF no matter how little precip there's been. California will likely lead the Nation in addressing route designation and travel management plans so look for this in your backyard next.

None of these things may affect you now but unless you're one of the anointed few who only hike, birdwatch, kayak, and backcountry ski, you're on the list.

It's interesting (and/or fucked) that people/gov't are going after sports like Surfing and Moto, yet they're really doing nothing in terms of real environmental impacts like corporate refuse and automobile emissions. It's okay to take fun stuff away but if it's part of the machine that creates mass amounts of capital, then whoa, it's off limits.

I don't like neither sledding nor tow-ins(or tow-ats) but i still agree that the Goverment MUST do something again pollution,which is probably not related to these sports..that will come later.

What are the chances that it has to do with the ammount of money that is available to fight these asshats? Huge corporations have nearly endless amounts of money to fight regulations, and the rest of us have only a few organizations that are spread way to thin in their fight to save our rights. As long as we fight on our own and not as one entity trying to save the rights of all recreationalists WE WILL KEEP LOSING. ITs really that easy, its a whole lot easier to defeat a bunch of small groups, instead of one large one. But we keep hurting ourselves, because we are too divided, dirt bikers hate ATVers, who hate snowmobilers, and none of us knew that towin surfing was even in danger. This explains what we are up against.

Most every industry that actual produces things, i.e. pollutes, is getting out of California. Alka can look at the business parks in Santa Cruz to see all of the companies that have closed because of pollution regulation (case in point Salz tannery). Lead warnings on products, restrictions on diesel particulate emission for railroads, there's a long long list of regulation in California mostly centered on business.

So many that now the largest sources of pollution are residential, not industrial.

It would not be difficult for the Coast Guard to catch and issue a citation to a tow-in team at Mavs.

They certainly would not have to put themselves in this situation to catch someone at Mavs:

Ghee--while the coast guard is hanging outside of the break and the rocks, waiting for the killer jetskis to come out, they'll notice the fishing trawlers that are out in the bay and go pickup the easy targets.

DJS. Do you know anything about the layout of Half Moon Bay, the harbor and Mavericks? The skis don't hang out inside the break or near the rocks. They only go in to pick up fallen surfers and get the hell back outside as fast as possible.

I am not saying that I agree with the ban of skis at Mavs. What I am saying is that if conditions are good for tow-in surfing it would be easy for the Coast Guard to issue a citation during a jetski ban in the area. The Coast Guard boats can get damn close to the break during a 20+ foot swell event that is conducive to tow-in surfing.

If they don't feel like putting over to Mavs from the harbor to hassel the boys then they can just wait for the tow guys to come back to the harbor and issue the ticket at the launch ramp. It is not like there is safe or easy access in the area other than the harbor. Oh, and somebody would probably have a chat with them while they're launching the skis.

I am not sure where you are coming from with the fishing trawler angle so I have no comment on that.

Anyway, the PWC ban at Mavs sux and will not affect only the tow-in guys but I don't need to go into that now.

Exactly what would the fine be?

Sleds & JetSkis both suck ass. If they disappeared tomorrow I would give less than one shit.

Don't care that much about Mavs as I neither tow or paddle in there. But I was happy a few years ago after it was banned further south. I recall a day in town that was hudge at Swift and Flea came buzzing by to tow in. It is a PITA to paddle in with one of those machines buzzing around.

I've had a hand full of days at big Moss, Davenport, 3 Mile and Scotts towing in. To be honest, it did not like it too much. I got plenty of waves, but it really minimizes the effect of big wave surfing. There is something special about making your drops at twenty feet plus. Getting towed in is so much easier, that you lose that part of the rush.

Don't really get past 15 feet anymore, so I am out of that game. It would be kind of cool if they had rule that tow ins at Mavs were only permitted once the wave hit 40' plus. At that point, paddling in becomes impossible expect for select few with balls and shoulders the size of homes.

So what you're saying is that the oil burning energy plant in Moss Landing is producing less pollution than a handful of PWC's at Mavericks 10 days a year. Regardless, I'm also talking about a fishing fleet in California that is held afloat (yes, pun) by tax payer dollars and are still chugging along on diesel. If the gov't just didn't pay them, then there are two birds knocked out with one stone.

Hugh, you're examples are legit, Salz being one of them, but notice they're going after the 'small' guys (and cracking down on the railroad industry is liking punching a dying horse), not companies like say Chevron or the number one power user in Cali, Google. That's the problem imho. Corporations with lobbying power get breaks because of their size, the small guys, like tow-surfers and local leather makers bear the true burden.

Be careful who you root against. The PWC ban was put in place by the feds at the NOAA. Here's a good article on the whole mess. Just like most of the bans that clack mentions, it's beaurocrats, not environmentalists, who are taking rights away. I think we can all agree that when it comes to things like saving Trestles, we'd be f___ked without people looking out for us and rallying the cause. It's just a matter of picking your battles & knowing who your friends are...
