Ask AKPM. I'm sure he knows plenty about sticky keyboards...
No joke, my work gave me a brand new Dell laptop. 2 weeks later, i dropped a slurpee on the keyboard and half the keys don't work. Any suggestions on fixing it you guys?
Buy a new keyboard.
I spilled root beer on my keyboard because of a mad CS induced mouse swing.
I tried everything. I removed every goddamn key. I soaked each and every one of them in alcohol. I swabbed down the whole damn pad underneath. I used compressed air, vacuums, hell, I even busted out my Swingline.
No dice.
New keyboard time.
Open it up, wash it out with soap and water, let the parts dry, put it back together. I do this every couple years to clean the funk out.
Works with anything except the really old PC keyboards that were made of actual metal.
Water doesn't harm electronics so long as they're not turned on and you let them dry totally before you turn them back on.
unlike the frame material post over in sprocket rockets i'm with spats on this one.
wash, dry and enjoy. also try tuning the empty keyboard tray upside down after washing it out gently, let er dry overnight and plug all the ol' keys back in in the mornin (pop keys out with a paperclip and make a keyboard map if ya don't know your qwerty by heart!).
oh my god i just cornered myself in the dork zone! damn!
I too have had beer spilt all over the right side of my keyboard. Keys stopped working but i found out the more i hit them and the harder i hit them they started working and eventually in a week they were working like new
heh, not bad...Quote:

Spats is right. This is the best way to claen a keyboard. If you're in a hurry, you can even dry it in an oven set to, say, 80-100 degrees.
I would only bother with cleaning it if it's a better quality board, like an older MaxiSwitch or Keytronics unit. If this is an El cheapo, then it's better to replace it with one of its $10 compatriots from Fry's.
Put it in the dishwasher.
I was really hoping this would be about those 1/2 keyboard 1/2 guitar instruments from the eighties.
Does this mean no more "Flock of Seagulls" cover tunes?
Replace your mouse balls first. There used to be a great IBM document on that, a classic of the late '80s.
so last milliniumQuote:

the Synthaxe Drumitar is the future.
futureman
That's actually a pretty good idea. That saves you the trouble of popping all the keys off. Should be fine as long as it dries completely.Quote:

On-topic - you'll be best off replacing it.
You can get an RF wireless keyboard/mouse setup for as little as 40 bucks at someplace like CompUSA or Costco.
