CO Springs skiing?

I will probably not get to talk to students when I got visit CO College's campus, and I am just bursting with curiousity, so I must pry: Is there any skiing closer than Breck or Keystone or all the I 70 resorts (closer to CO Springs, that is)? Like is Pike's Peak skiable, assuming you've got the gear and knowledge? Or is there any other BC shit to be had within that vicinity? I don't know how many CO Springs Maggots are here, but if there are any, I'd love to get some ski beta on the town.

I mean, the question that you need to be asking yourself is: where do you want to raise your kids? What kind of day care programs are available in SLC, DEN, PDX, SEA, PHX?

Just kidding, little man. From what I know, CO Springs is definitely not the place to go if skiing is as high a priority as I know it is for you.

Having seen all your dumb questions from day one when you showed up a p-mag, I feel like I have a good sense of your personality and desired specs for a college, and I will offer up the fact that University of Colorado - Boulder will better satisfy your needs than anywhere else you've mentioned. As for your interest in Utah, just storm chase with Funkendrenchman - he goes there practically every week.

Because it's a backup (sort of)... and my parents think the education would kick Boulder's ass (Princeton review gives it an academic 90, whereas Boulder got a 78). AND I could probably get money to go there from scores and grades, but I get jack shit to go to a big state school. Go figure...

It's kinda sad that I've already narrowed down my choices to 3 out of state and 2 in-state (in-state... that's like a 4-letter word).

If you're moving west to ski I'd really reconsider CO. UofU is under an hour from some of the best skiing on earth. WAY less traffic to the hills. WAY less traffic on the hills. WAY more snow. WAY better terrain.

My parents wont even let me VISIT U of U (Princeton review says time at class and studying is a distant second between Mormon missions and skiing... not the ideal pre-med program). I'm not going just to ski. I'm going for an education that is highly compatible with skiing. I'm just praying that really exists...

what are you going to major in? If you dont know thats fine, but as a alum of UofC boulder I can tell you that Boulder its an amazing place, an amazing school with access to great skiing for someone like yourself. (Plus the girls are absolutely beautiful and plentiful.)

CC and U of C boulder could not be more different. My cousin went to CC while I was at boulder and our experiences were totally different.

The academics are solid at both schools, butwhat you put in is what you get out. If you want a small school with very personal attention and a tiny community of students go to CC. If the idea of immersing yourself in one or two classes over months sounds great than go to CC. If you want a large student body and great parties and a social life that doesnt quit and a campus and town that are amazing than Boulder is the place. I still go there to hang out and bike occasionally. Boulder is a shitload of fun.

If you plan your semesters right you can even swing a full courseload over two or three days and ski 3 or 4 days a week. I did. Plus they have a great ski club that takes affordable trips 3 or 4 times a year to Jackson, UT, Squaw, whistler etc.

My impression of the springs? as a town, not so great.
CO springs is a lame town that is a 2 1/2 hr commute to breck and longer if you want to go anywhere else.

I dont know anything about the U of U except I would have flunked from having such amazing terrain and snow so close by. But for a newbie like yourself the terrain and snow in Summit would be a fine introduction to real skiing. A basin, Vail's backcountry, Berthoud pass and a ton of other routes would more than satisfy you. Plus Jackson is a 9-10 hr drive and Utah is only 8. Plenty of accessability when the storms roll in. I would be happy to put you in touch with my cous if you are interested in his side of the story. or just PM lane meyer on this board. (he is in squaw now and just got a great job doing geology work in truckee.) Lucky bastard.

max, UofU has a great premed and an actual medical school if I'm not mistaken. My wife graduated from the U as a pharmacist and from everything I picked up from her it sounded like the U and it's hospitals, research park, and the like are all top notch. Lot's of medicinal breakthroughs happen up on the hill.

Also, I don't see how somebody else going on a mission would effect your schooling in anyway. That made no sense. If it has to do with various school rating/testing I'd throw it out again as it doesn't apply to you (unless your easily sucked into religions and want to be a door to door religious salesman for a few years).

If your parents aren't letting you go purely due to religious bigotry that's cool too. ;)

Maybe, maybe not. It may depend on your major. I didn't go to U of C, but I imagine the same thing holds true at most places. If you're in a major where you need to take lots of labs, you might be able to get in a four day week, but I can't imagine how you could do two or three.

As far as the premed stuff goes, if the school has a good premed program or not, it doesnt matter. Most small places(I'm guess CC) dont even have a premed program. There are just certain classes you gotta take, which are offered at every college. Thats why you can be a philosophy or govt major and go to med school. You dont have to be premed. Thats just something they make up to make it sound more legit.

If you finish with a 3.5 average and get at least a 30 on the MCATs you shouldnt have a problem getting into a US med school. Or at least thats what I understand.

If you are science major, then you usually wind up having a mwf schedule, and get stuck with labs on the other days for part of the day. With a full course load I can swing weekends at the hill and occationally a tuesday or thursday. This spring I was only taking philosophy and literature classes, and didnt have class monday, wednesday, or friday. So 5 days a skiing/biking/camping/hiking/enjoying myself a week.

I'd suggest being a philosophy major and getting the chem/bio reqs for medschool out of the way during the summers or freshman/soph year.

From what I remember, it's pretty easy for a non-canuck to get in to UBC or UofC(another skiable uni) as long as the grades are there. Oh, and some seriously large wads of cash.

Denver is next on my list. I went there and liked it, but the crowd seemed a little bit more uptight than the seeminly laid-back atmosphere at Boulder. Boulder looks like a shitload of fun. I'm in like flynn, except for the economics, but my parents tell me to stop worrying about that. However, I don't know that it's not selfish just to take whatever I want from them. When I enroll next year, they will have THREE kids in college. That's a pretty big bill.

The gay part is that they don't want me to go anywhere further than CO. They say the PNW is just so far away that they can't even fathom it. Otherwise, I would look into U Dub and Oregon.

If you didn't see my other college thread (I guess we're starting a new one here...) I am dead set on pre-med. I know U of U has a kick ass medical school, and that will DEFINITELY be something to keep in mind later down the line. But for now I need kickass undergrad, which I'm not sure that U of U has (sorry Utards, but the stats just ain't there... I've looked).

Basically CC is just a different type of alternative. I'm trying to have as many options as possible, but the number of schools that really fit my interest are few and far between (literally). My counselor says I should be applying to 7 or 8 places at least, but I just can't understand why. There aren't 7 or 8 places that I could see myself going (according to my standards and my parents'--meaning a prestigious school with more kids than my high school--, having the PNW as an availability might open up another choice or two). It's up to a whopping three now. Always has been.

Sorry, I'm rambling. But I'm just gonna go and see what happens. If it boils down to the economics of it, I may just have to accept the fact that I can't eat my cake and have it too. The cake itself--just having mountains around, much more than I have now--may well be worth not being able to have it.

Edit: CD, I hate everything but science. I will take English as few times as possible and as early as possible. Same for History (I probably hate that even more). Math isn't as bad. The rest of the time I will satiate myself with biochems and o-chems and all the other sciences. So I guess I'm screwed as far as weekdays for skiing...

For what it's worth, my premed friends had little time for anything besides studying, let alone skiing. A teammate from my HS ski team and I both ended up going to U of O. I skied constantly, being a poli sci/biz major and not even buying books. She, on the other hand, saw about 7 days on snow during 4.5 years of college. Of course, she's a doctor now and I'm a professional void.

So maybe other factors should be more important.

Utah sucks. Stay in Colorado Springs.

It happened to my daughter, who applied to 4 schools. She graduated number 1 in her class. There are too many applicants that look like her, so her first choice, Stanford, rejected her. She ended up at Penn, and loves it, but it wasn't where she really wanted to be.

Based on my English major friends who are now doctors, I second the advice that you take the lab sciences off season.

I was a dual major at Syracuse University and skiied locally two nights a week, went to New England every weekend, went out West every spring break and graduated. And got into law school. You can ski and go to college.

Stanford has a 95 academic rating. Penn's isn't much lower. I don't want something that ridiculous. I like to think that the schools I'm applying to are pretty easy to get into but unfortunately nearly impossible to get a scholarship to. Their ratings are hovering around 80, not mid 90's. Not that that really matters in ease of admittance...

DaveTV said something about Monarch. I know almost nothing about that area. I was at Purgatory when I was like 4 but that doesn't exactly make me an expert. Soooo... what's up there? Wolf Creek and Silverton and Monarch, etc.... how far are they (assuming they are near EACH OTHER, I don't even know this much) from CO Springs?

As I have tried to make clear, Boulder is the place that fits me best and the one that I like the most, but it just may be the most expensive. Thus I am trying to consider a "close second" if there is one.
